Success Of The RSPCA And Pets At Home

The RSPCA and Pets at home are two businesses that I have chosen for this topic. I have chosen them because they both are fairly well known around the UK. And for a business such as pets at home there are a few stores surrounding the UK. The two businesses I have chosen can both be compared and contrast each other. The comparison is that they both are linked to pets but one is a store that helps the health of the pets, and also sells pets. But the RSPCA are for pets that are getting abused or miss treated. Pets at home sells a lot of material such as food, fishes, fish tanks and pumps. Although both businesses have both advantages and disadvantages.

Business ownership and liability

Pets at home

There are several different types of ownership these vary depending how many people own the business, such as partnerships or sole traders. This means the business can be big or small, this depends on the amount of owners for the business. The liability means what is the businesses financial debt that is made in the start-up of the business and how the business can cope with the financial problems over time. Pets at home is a public limited company. This means the business is invested with just money so the founder Anthony Preston had invested money for the business so if the business goes wrong then all that can be taking is the money invested, so not what he own so for example his house or cars as he won’t be responsible as shareholders runs the business.

The advantages of being a public limited company means that they have limited liability for shareholders. Although it does come with some disadvantages such as they need legal documents, as they are run by shareholders. And have to pay taxes. It is much easier for a public limited company to raise large amounts of capital from investors or banks and therefore to expand. This is because it will allow the business to have more room and storage meaning more products could be sold in store, so which what the customer will buy meaning the company would make more profit.

But it all balances out with the advantages and disadvantages as public limited companies can suffer inefficient from becoming too large to handle, so for example if pets at home was a worldwide they would struggle to keep running, as there wouldn’t be much communication. All public limited companies have to publish their financial accounts so annual information about them is made public. This means that the whole public would know pets at home financial problems. So if the business shut down then it would be pronounce in public, so on the new and etc.

RSPCA

The RSPCA is a registered charity that relies on donations from the public. The RSPCA states that its mission as a charity is, by all lawful means to prevent cruelty. The RSPCA still relies on leadership as there is still more than one shareholder. The liability is run by the government so the RSPCA has to pay the government tax so if the business went in dept. than the charity wouldn’t be responsible for it. But the disadvantage of this charity is that they rely on peoples pets or they rely on customers fundraising money for the charity to raise money and awareness.

The way the two businesses differ is that pets at home is public limited company which relies on products to be sold whereas the RSPCA is a charity that relies on the donations or the adoptions of the pets. But in a way they do have similarities as they both do rely on pets and both put pets before profit, this makes them look like a good organisation as they are saying the business is more important than profit. Pets at homes saying is ‘pets before profit’ this is on their website. T

his makes them outstanding because they pretty much are saying if their customers aren’t happy about how the vets handle their pets then pretty much there won’t be any profit. So the vets have got to be fun and loving to the pets so they show the customers trust and passion. This leads to customers going to pets at home instead of other pet stores, meaning they will end up making better profit.

The purpose of the business

Pets at home

The purpose of pets at home is that they want to communicate with the customers to bring their pets in for another check-up to see if they are healthy and if they are not then, they will try anything to diagnose the problem and solve it. Pets at home also sells animals such as rabbits, mice and fish. But they do also sell fish tanks with all the equipment for example pump, lights. Although due to the new refurbishments at the Martlesham pets at home they have decreased the stuff they sell meaning they will lose out in some profit as not as many people will be attracted to the pets.

RSPCA

The purpose of the RSPCA is to help all the unwanted animals that may have a chance at getting another home with another family that wants them. So they rely on the purchase of the animals for example if a customer came in a brought a cat the RSPCA would rely on that money. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) is a charity operating in England and Wales that promotes animal welfare. In 2017, the RSPCA investigated 141, 760 cruelty complaints and secured 1, 492 convictions. The charity also rescued and collected 114, 584 animals, carried out 222, 664 microchipping and their branches and centers gave 44, 611 animals a second chance of a new home through rehoming. Founded in 1824, it is the oldest and largest animal welfare organization in the world and is one of the largest charities in the UK. The organization also does international outreach work across Europe, Africa and Asia.

The range of activities / products / services

Pets at home

One of the popular uses of pets at home business can be used for a quick way to get your pets a check-up. But they do sell a range of stuff, like food and resources. These stores are normally located near big superstores all throughout the UK. The customers that want to get their dogs a check-up or for a haircut will book an appointment through rather mail or phone call. There is only two stores around Ipswich Suffolk County meaning it is not very popular throughout the Ipswich culture. Some people tend to go to actual companies that only cut dogs hair whereas pets at home sells everything so it is hidden that they cut and check-up on dogs. Or they get in private hires to cut their dogs hair. But the pets at home stores are actually popular through the whole of the UK. Pets at home is a successful company meaning it will not shut down anytime soon.

RSPCA

RSPCA have one way to make money, although there could potentially be another way. So the way the RSPCA get their money is by protecting abused cats and taking them in to sell them to a better owner, but they could go to schools for a fair and sell cake etc. the RSPCA is the largest animal welfare charity in the UK. The RSPCA also have adverts on several channels on TV which are very emotional therefore catching people’s attention leading them to want to adopt a pet, this is a successful way because it gets people’s attention easily as the people watching the advert feel sensitive towards pets being mistreated.
