California, Colorado, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington have legalized physician assisted suicide due to the actions as life will take its course naturally to help alleviate fears of dying from pain while receiving medical assistance. “Recorded by the five states 4249 prescriptions have been written for PAS drugs since 1998, 66.3% of patients used the drugs to end their lives,63.1% of the people who chose to take the drugs had cancer” (euthanasia.procon.org).

Many of whom have opted to take their lives by physician assisted suicide have an incurable disease without a cure like Glioblastoma and ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), Glioblastoma is an aggressive brain cancer without a cure only able to slow down the progression through treatments of surgery and other methods. Most often, patients have only 3 -4 weeks to live or an outlier’s case of 3 years. Patients suffering from these illnesses can only slow the progression of the illness for so long. To avoid a painful passing they chose a death of dignity through a prescription of pill allowing them to rest peacefully without discomfort or pain.

Oregon will not allow anyone with an illness to have the procedure, the person seeking to Physician assisted suicide must be terminally ill likewise in Washington state those with less than 6 months to live and are a resident of that state qualify for physician assisted suicide. A patient must be checked by two different physicians to determine if they’re terminally ill. Patients must be older than 18 years old and qualify as an adult, they must be mentally competent of being able to make their own decisions and understanding of the choices they making plus the patient must be the one to make the choice by speech for medication in person and legally with in a state that allows it. Additionally, the person taking the medication must be capable of applying it to their self and is able to intake medications without assistance.

Many Citizens believe it to be as indecent, Unmoral, and unceremonious under society’s norms. Opinions of many who are against this believe as human beings shouldn’t have the right to control another’s life and put end to their life. “How we die, live, and are cared for at the end of life is important, with implications for individuals, their families, and society.” (Sulmasy, Mueller). As many people hold to themselves and others that life should be kept sacred and not to be tampered with, a popular belief among many people who disagree with physician assisted suicide.

Secondly people fear it as if it were to become a social norm when someone with an illness is to be euthanized. That it will allow anyone who is sick or old to be put to rest without a second thought or care for their feelings becoming a society unfeeling of the weak and how precious the life of a human being is.
