Tragic Casualties Of Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey was a huge devastation for many families all around the country. It was disastrous because there were some fatalities, home losses, and a huge damage cost. Hurricane Harvey caused many accidents that destroyed families.

“Harvey caused at least 107 confirmed deaths”. These fatalities caused a lot of grief around the country for the families of the people that passed. More than half of these deaths were caused by the 52’ flood waters. This hurricane was a category 4 with winds up to 130 mph on August 25, 2017. “Many of the deaths confirmed in 11 Texas counties when people were caught in quickly rising floodwaters”. I have empathy for those who have lost a family member during the flood of Hurricane Harvey. These casualties have brought grief to me as well as the family members of those who have lost their lives during this traumatic experience. This catastrophe caused some devastating fatalities along with many home losses. Harvey has destroyed many homes and turned dozens of families homeless and put into shelters. “185,149 Homes estimated to be damaged or destroyed by Harvey, 364,000 People who have registered for assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and 42,399 people in shelters”.

My family mostly lives in downtown Houston where most of the damage has been done. My aunt, uncle and little cousins had to move out of their home because the flooding destroyed the house they had. “1.5 miles radius around the Arkema chemical plant in Crosby, Texas, that was evacuated after a container of chemicals ignited due to flood water knocking out the plant's power”. The people that lived around the radius of this chemical spill had to be evacuated, so nobody could get more hurt due to the harmful chemicals. A majority of the families that lost their homes and got hurt did not have insurance to cover their injuries. Now they are no longer drowning in the flood but in their medical bills. Not only did the flood destroy many homes, but it destroyed a huge part of many towns and cities.

“Hurricanes Harvey and Irma caused between $150 billion and $200 billion in damage to Texas and Florida”. Due to the damage costs, “22.5% Houston population living below the poverty line”. This event has cost many people their jobs as well as their homes. “The economic costs include disruptions to businesses, increased rates of unemployment, damage to infrastructure, crop losses, property damage and higher fuel prices”. My aunt worked at one of the smaller real estate buildings that flooding and destroyed everything they had records of as well as their technology. This was a huge setback for many people who had a life going, a home that was either rented or owned, and a good steady job.

The traumatic event that was named Hurricane Harvey will never be forgotten by those who have lost a member of their family, a home, or the entire county that is still facing damage costs. My empathy goes to my family and everyone else's as well.
