Josef Mengele: Making Of A Monster

Eva and Miriam were his favorite set of twins. They were afforded special treatment, such as being able to keep their hair and clothing and receiving extra food rations. As long as they remained healthy and useful they would be kept alive. Others however, were not so lucky. Eva recalled that a set of Gypsy twins were once brought back from Mengele’s lab. The twins had been sewn back to back. Mengele had attempted to create a Siamese twin by connecting blood vessels and organs. The twins screamed day and night until the injections set in. After 3 days, they were dead. Josef Mengele performed many experiments on the thousands of twins that arrived at Auschwitz death camp. He had always wanted to know why twins looked alike. He performed his experiments in hopes of finding an explanation. More than 3,000 twins passed through Auschwitz, if you were lucky enough you made it out alive. Mengele had been so brainwashed, all he knew was that he hated everyone who walked through the gate into the camp After you were there he didn’t care what happened to you.

Mengele was a very evil man and didn’t seem to care about anything other than his experiments. He didn’t have to worry about the consequences, there was no one to stop him. Mengele was a very precise man, scarcely a hair out of place, his dark green tunic neatly pressed, and his Death’s Head SS cap tilted slightly to one side. This picture of this horrifying man remained vivid in the minds of those who survived his excruciating tortures and experiments. Josef Mengele simply did not care about anything other than his thousands of sets of twins, and if things weren’t going his way, he would find a way to make sure it was in his favor. One time a mother did not want to be separated from her daughters and she bit and screamed and scratched the face of the officer who tried to force her to her assigned line. Josef decided he had had enough of this women, so he drew his gun and shot both the mother and her daughters for punishment. This is how Mengele got the nickname “Angel of Death.” He would just murder people just because things weren’t going his way. Sometimes during an experiment a twin would die because of the horrible treatment they were getting, he would get very angry and just kill the other twin. He believed that his whole trial was ruined because of the death of one of the twins. He would kill the other twin with an injection to the heart then remove their organs for “examination.” He had always had some sort of obsession with twins. If you were not a twin he didn’t care what happened to you outside of his laboratory. He didn’t even care what happened to you in his laboratory as long as his experiments were going as planned. Such as when Jona Laks and her sister were not immediately recognized as twins, so they were sent off towards the gas chambers. Her sister then informed an officer that they were twins, they were then rushed to Mengele’s lab. As you can tell Mengele was a very evil man. One of his assistant doctors said, “He had an unlimited supply of twins to study, and he wouldn’t get in trouble if they died,”. He knew he couldn’t get in trouble, everyone else was doing terrible things as well. Therefore he didn’t need to care about the pain and the terrified twins and what they were going through during these gruesome experiments, nobody was there to stop him.

Mengele started to develop an obsession with changing the eye color of the twins. He was fascinated by the different colors of the eye. When Jona Laks first arrived at the laboratory she experiments. He was fascinated by the different colors of the eye. When Jona Laks first arrived at the laboratory she was immediately stunned by what she saw. “I was looking at a whole wall of human eyes. A wall of blue eyes, green eyes, brown eyes. These eyes were staring back at me like a collection of butterflies and with that I fell to the floor,”. He would remove the eyes of those who died during the experiments and put them in a jar to be on display in his lab. Vera Kriengel and her sister Olga first arrived at the camp and Mengele came running towards them. He was intrigued by what he saw, her “perfect Aryan features” and “perfect brown eyes,”. They were of course selected for the experiments. When they got to his lab they were placed in a small wooden cage for the first part of the experiment. They were given painful injection in the back in attempt to change their eye color. Josef would usually perform his experiment without anesthesia because to him it was unnecessary. This made the experiments way worse for the twins. He would hold their eyes open and inject chemicals into their eyes to change the color, even though he told them they already had beautiful eyes. The more twins that came through the more insane Mengele became. He eventually got to the point where he would murder a twin as soon as they arrived so he could have their. He simply didn’t care about the lives of the people he was murdering. Josef Mengele was just like every other worker in the camp, they were all the same, cruel, torturous, cold hearted people.

A record of a doctor who was forced to work for Mengele was found. In the record it stated that there were 732 twins that he and Mengele had performed experiments on. It suggested that the assistant doctor believed that Mengele might have been interested in the inheritance and prosperity of having twins of his own. This is why he was so interested in performing these agonizing experiments. He performed many more horrific experiments other than just wanting to change their eye color. He was fascinated with drawing blood. Some of his patients bled to death because Mengele couldn’t stop himself from taking so much blood. Even after he let people bleed to death, he didn’t learn from his mistake or try to stop himself, he just moved onto the next person. Its as if Mengele had no heart, he lets innocent people die because he lets his experiments over take him. To Mengele, twins were priceless things to him, and he rescued them from the gas chambers. They were fed good food and provided with clean clothes and comfortable living conditions. After the twins were strengthened, all parts of their bodies were measured and described minutely. He and his assistant then performed crude surgery on them, including amputations. On one night when Mengele was alone he used injections to kill 14 children for bizarre purposes. He would even inject diseases into the twins. Once he chose over 100 twins and inject them with a bacteria that caused Noma’s disease. Noma disease gives the child an infection of the mouth or genitals that causes boils and often turns gangrenous. Most of the twins that were injected with the disease became feverish and died. The man also performed experiments on prisoners using electricity, radiation, and other methods. He did not show any mercy when performing these ghastly and inhuman actions. According to Josef’s son, Rolf, even years later, Mengele never expressed any feelings of shame or regret. Witnesses recall him shooting prisoners, hitting them with iron bars, and even burning children alive. He was said to have a very explosive temper, he would act out in savage ways and immediately return to his scientific pursuits with no sign that anything had happened (Schmittroth and Rosteck 315). Mengele was a cruel man. He acted like nothing even happened after he would brutally murder someone. It was as if he had no feelings at all. No one could stop him and his horrific experiments even if they tried.

Josef Mengele was a very evil man, he became so obsessed with his experiments he didn’t care about anything else. He didn’t have to worry about getting in trouble for what he was doing because no one was there to stop him. Mengele was not the only evil man in the camps, so was everyone else who didn’t try to stop the madness going on in the camps. It’s like all the evil people who commit the mass murders today. Nobody is there to stop them until it’s too late. Nobody was there to stop the Holocaust and all the evil things going on in the camp until it was too late. What’s going to happen if we are too late to stop something that eventually turns into something as horrific as the Holocaust?
