Formation Of Human Values Due To Those Around
Everywhere. They are everywhere. Up until today, I am still astonished of how a human being’s character or values is/are shaped in majority by the influences around him/her. As shallow as it may sound, it’s really amazing how lives of individuals generally work. Wherever we are, whatever the time is, every breath, every action, basically every second of living complements our individuality as human beings in this world. Given this thought, I have perceived that the protagonists of the three given stories are all individuals who took-off on a journey to find more pieces of themselves. They were yet to discern who they are, and who they are to others.
Building and Strengthening Relationships. All three stories exhibited social dynamics in the course of meeting their co-characters along the journey. This is an essential factor for we sometimes find the meaning of our own lives through relationships with diverse kinds of people. Love will soon build up which will cause us to commit ourselves to others, and that makes our existence take on a deeper significance. Stars were highly emphasized in the Little Prince—we are the stars. They were characterized to be attractive and filled with light but will soon be vanished. But though vanished, there will still be radiance from the starts around that star—people we’ve touched will remember the light that we’ve given them.
Diversity of Religion, Belief or Way of Living. Different beliefs were highlighted as the protagonists of the story met their co-characters. In the Little Prince, characters ranged from being a vain man, a geographer up to even a drunkard, which all of whom are obsessed with their livelihood. As for the Alchemist, most of the characters believed in the “Soul of the Worlds” which equates to their “God”. In addition, dissimilarities of life decisions were perceived. An example would be when Santiago devoted his time in searching for his Personal Legend unlike the crystal merchant who knew that his Personal Legend was to make a pilgrimage for Mecca, but never fulfilled this dream anyway. Now for the Life of Pi, Pi himself had numerous religions which gave him the courage to conquer the challenges in his life, particularly surviving in the boat. Different beliefs mean different approaches to those beliefs.
Survival and Having the Proper Mindset to Achieve Life Goals. All three protagonists made the most out of their journey since they all had the mindset that they can reach their destination. The Little Prince despite his complicated relationship with the Rose continuously learned because of his curiosity as he visited planet to planet. In the Alchemist, he never lost the hope of finding the treasure despite the tough desert route that he had to face. And as for the Life of Pi, I absolutely salute his bravery by being optimistic in staying alive and reaching the beach given that he was with enormous wild animals for several hours that could possibly eat him on the boat. Truly, the unpleasant obstacles bring out the best of us
Freedom and Never Giving Up. Yes, there are silver linings but there are going to be times wherein we must be the ones to reach out for that silver lining in clouds. Struggles, disappointments and hatred--- life will never run out of those. Freedom was displayed in the Little Prince when the fox showed willingness to sacrifice his freedom for the prince to tame him. As for the Alchemist, Santiago had the freedom in decision making because he knows that he himself has full authority of his life. He truly values his freedom very highly. Things change as for Pi since he has never been less free throughout his survival at sea. But here’s the thing, all three had the capability of loving the world despite the unparalleled freedom. What kept them going was the strength that they gather within themselves and even from others.
Perspective Changes Everything and Mends Differences. All three books had a common issue and that is the disparity that the protagonists faced with their co-characters. Their interactions either resulted to positive or negative responses. But whether it’s good or bad, it will always be up to us. It is up to us if we will change our perspective and therefore change the outcome of any event.
