A Letter Of Application By Aristotle
My name is Aristotle. I am writing this letter in purpose to apply for a position of Philosophy Instructor at Rogers State University. The reason I apply for this position is that I want to use the knowledge from my learning process to work in the new environment as Rogers State University.
Through my years studying in Plato’s Academy and working as a tutor for Alexander the Great, I strongly believe that I perfectly have the possibility to qualify and fit the position in Department of English and Humanities of Rogers State University as a Philosophy Instructor. By having an experience spending half of my life with studying, teaching, and writing in Philosophy, I properly have the advantage to work in the professional environment which helps me work and integrate with the student easily.
Besides, I am interested in solving the problems and seeing the world from different aspects to analyze the meaning of life, and I also love communicating and having arguments about specific fields of philosophy. I was always attracted in talking about the important terms of a philosophy which included various kind of interesting and difficult terms of study with ontology, potency, act, and especially the contingent of God. Then, I have skill and experience in communication, making research, and specific teaching skills which are very useful for my teaching. This totally convinced me to apply for this position to work as Philosophy Instructor in Rogers State University.
Moreover, I have the possibility to instruct and provide the knowledge to the student since I can mentor the principle, the essence, and the material to point out more terms which I considered as the most important fields of philosophy: Metaphysics, Physics, De Anima, Ethics, and Politics. I am convinced that I am absolutely a productive scholar and an effective teacher, I always want to find the new abstracts and aspects of philosophy by updating the news and the learning to discover the more useful knowledge of philosophy to introduce to the students in the course because “all human beings by nature desire to know”.
I have strongly paid attention to 3 terms of philosophy as my course subjects: Physics, De Anima, and Nicomachean Ethics. I personally think that they have inseparable connections to each other. Through my research, I believe that there are 4 factors of causation: material cause, formal cause, efficient/ moving cause, and final cause. Especially, the final cause or “TELOS” (Teleology) is the term that shows the reasons of existence and having done of something, it powerfully has the possibility to connect all the field of philosophy together. From where I stand, nature never acts in vain, “for nature, we say, does nothing pointlessly, and a human being is the only animal with rational discourse.” Therefore, everything is teleologically oriented for the exact purpose and sake which people particularly need to adopt the way of life with our nature.
Besides, the way I see the term of De Anima based on substance is totally by making several questions between the relationship between the soul and the body, “Does the soul exist?”, or “Is there only one kind of soul or many?.” Personally, I have a point of view that the “SOUL” (Psuche) is a living physical substance where the relationship of the soul and the body was made, “it is the form of natural body, and that the body is the matter informed by the soul”. It is my considered opinion that the soul and the body have the intimate relationship, “It is clear, then, that the soul is not separable from the body. At least, some parts of it are not, if it is divisible into parts”. A soul is a form that has live, think, and perceive. It does exist as a living physical thing and makes human become the rational animal which has own disagreement, tolerance, and relativism compared to the other species.
Furthermore, the term of teleology and soul through the abstract philosophy of Physics and De Anima both connected to Nicomachean Ethics that contains the definition called “EUDAIMONIA” (Happiness or Flourishing) and “ARETE” (Excellent Viture). They both have the unique aim to discover: What is the good for man. There are several opinions and conceptions of the good and happiness, “the many, most vulgar, would conceive the good and happiness as pleasure, and hence they also like the life of gratification” which means that they believe and identify a life with pleasure and gratification, would make human feeling happy. They have a faith that they choose these things forsakes. As my point of view, “honor, intelligent and pleasure have different and dissimilar accounts, precisely insofar as they are goods”, the way I see happiness as it is the central purpose of the reason why human exist. Happiness is totally different from motion and feeling. We only seek out the good and happiness to a human being if only the activity endures for rational reasons, choices, and decisions during the lifetime, not just having a pleasant feeling and motion like animals. Objectively, there is an astringency and relation compared to the term of happiness to teleology since they both have the same destination of doing the things in purpose to achieve the best goal itself. In order to have the teleology which brings happiness to the human being, there must be the needs of being the rational animals making the rational decisions. That is all I have done so far with my course objectives in Philosophy.
Furthermore, I have spent lots of time doing the research and adding lots of examples and specific situations for the lesson, this will make sure that all the students can understand clearly the new terms or definitions given during the course. I suggest the student making mind map each lesson to ensure that they have all necessary knowledge which helps them to get over the test. My first work after getting a position of Philosophy Instructor would definitely be giving different kinds of interesting assignments that support and reconsolidate the knowledge in class and developing more conversations and exciting arguments before finishing the lesson. The source for this philosophy course would be flashcards or specific keywords provided information during the class hours for the student in order to help them prepare for the exam.
Since I strongly focus on the writing and reading skills, I would set this course with the weekly quiz contains 5 quick questions contained the philosophers and their theories. Besides, students need to submit 1 monthly essay that illustrates their writing skill and basic logic by having the arguments to show how they understand the lesson with the different point of views about philosophy. Showing opinions and new statements but reasonable about philosophy are encouraged. My teaching style is mainly empirical which depends on how the students analyze the data and have an observation during the lesson. Therefore, there will be the classification and critical freely with the soft conversation between the instructor – students or student – student. The general knowledge of philosophy would definitely be provided. I rather give the student more opportunities to find and make the conclusion of the theory, the principle, and the essence proceed by the evidence and knowledge in the class.
Showing my experience and knowledge about philosophy, I have a self-confident that I am an excellent candidate that fit this position at Rogers State University. I have a faith that my thoughts in philosophy would absolutely match with the teaching style and the course objectives in Rogers State University. I also have a strong believe that I can bring to the student new discovery and develop passion for student in studying philosophy. I really appreciate your patience in spending time and having the consideration of my intent letter.
