A Problem Of Diabetes In Modern World

Solutions to the worldwide diabetes epidemic

Diabetes is becoming the world's health challenge, contributing to over 5 million annual deaths across the globe. Over 415 people in the world are suffering from diabetes, elevating the health spending from 600 billion to over 1 trillion. In order to curb this epidemic, it is important to invest in prevention especial in the more vulnerable regions. The foundation of mitigating the whole epidemic is by changing the lifestyle habits. There is a need to create awareness on health eating habits that will help in controlling obesity by body exercise, reducing intake of sugary foods, low fats consumption and taking spiced foods. These moves will help mitigate the diabetes epidemic.

Subjects for rare disease clinical trials

The diagnose and treatment of rare diseases also referred to as orphaned diseases have been a challenge to the health sector. Over 200,000 people in the world have fallen victims of the orphan diseases. However, the health sector manages to administer treatments and control the orphan diseases through trial clinics. Trial treatments are administered to the sampled patients as a way of establishing the actual treatment of the disease. A good example of orphan diseases is the Lysosome Storage Disorders. For the doctors to know where to find subjects to use in clinical trials, there is a need for research. Establishing a research on the most vulnerable population to be affected by the disease in terms of geographical location and demographic elements will help the doctors know where specifically they are likely to get the subjects for the rare disease. The demographics and geographic research on the orphan disease will also help the health sectors to know specifically where to establish the trial clinic.

Small independent pharmacies

There has been a great debate on whether the independent pharmacies can compete with the mass merchants. Independent pharmacies sell medicines, beauty products, and other pharmaceuticals over the counter in small amounts and for direct consumption by the customers. On the side of mass merchants, they sell the pharmaceuticals in large scale to retailers and whole sellers. The independent pharmacies obtain the medicine among other products from the big chains and sell them alongside other products such bread, milk, and toys. This combination seems to generate much revenue compared to the big chains which only depend on the pharmaceutical products for their income.

However, the element of income does not in any way create a competition between the two. The big chains will sell in bulk, making large sales at a time and hence generating a lot of revenue. They enjoy the economy of scale and proper management. The big chains are well branded with a greater market segment. High managerial skills, staffing, and marketing enable the big chains to maximize their revenue and expand their business. On the other side, independent pharmacies face poor management, little market share and hence pose no competition to the big chains. In order to cope with the market crisis, the independent pharmacies should not be restricted to particular products of sale.
