A Stronger Institution For The Global Common Good

The need for a stronger institution to uphold the global common good is evident. The collectives of states is an enduring practice because in the sovereign of states each cannot focus on the self-interest of their state solely, but the common good of all. Political leaders recognize that their main responsibility is to serve the citizens of their state; however, in doing so it leads them to extremes when coming to mutual agreements with the other states. The global institution to meet the many transnational problems must become stronger in discovering a shared goal by all humankind. A look at how a stronger institution for the global common good would be beneficial for the world as a whole would be easier to look at it on a smaller scale to start. The European Union established a common currency, passport, and road system. In doing so, this institution established a sense of unity for these sovereign states. A huge part of the EU that would be beneficial on a global scale is their shared understanding and acceptance of the protected rights of asylum seekers and refugees. Today, we are facing globalization to meet transnational problems such as refugees, migration, human rights enforcement, disarmament, and peacemaking.

A phenomenon that cannot be overlooked because it can create unusual opportunities for a huge prosperity in the world. These international problems should be accompanied by effective worldwide agencies that would oversee and direct these transnational problems into the correct direction reaching the common good as a whole. This is something that an individual state, even being the most powerful, would be incapable of doing. In order to achieve this goal, there must be more coordinance between the more powerful leaders of their countries. These international agencies must seek the interest of the whole by being equally represented and coming to a conclusion of this common good with giving answers to these problems with given rules and regulations. By having this common institution that helps find and reach a common good for the sovereign states, it would ultimately help in many various world problems we’re facing using checks and balances. A stronger institution being made for globalization would be a major step for peacemaking because it is an opportunity to create a network of understanding, and solidarity amongst peoples, without reducing everything to merely commercial or pragmatic exchanges. In this network, there would also be room for other human problems of each place, particularly immigrants being forced to leave their own land in search for better living conditions; something that at times has extensive consequences for the individual, as well as family.

When looking to the Catholic Social teachings it shows a clear way how to approach these problems. As Pope Benedict states, “an essential dimension of her being and her mission, selflessly demonstrates her… concerns for the needy of all conditions and origins. In this task, she collaborates with various entities and public institutions so that no one seeking support may be lacking a friendly hand to help them overcome their difficulties… she offers personal and material resources, but, above all, a human closeness which seeks to alleviate the deepest poverty”. Using the church as a means of an institution, Uruguay for example, adopted this presence of the church as an institution for justice and peace. In the bottom, most of this country different perspectives of life coexist peacefully and in mutual respect. This is because of the trust in the church’s social teachings of rendering them through adversity, generous in loyal collaboration, in hopefulness in building a better future for the common good of all. I would suggest that the establishment of an institution for the common good be made stronger and to begin forging common interests around the issues of the global concerns: refugees, migration, human rights enforcement, disarmament, and peacemaking. To approach it in a functional matter, based on the needs and possibilities for cooperative, non zero outcomes that are made by the world leaders. Always keeping in mind that interests are becoming inevitably merged and that our self-interests for our separate states are bound together with those of others. In the areas where it is not possible to come to a mutual agreement, we can at the least come up with an agreement on what is bad, and what should be avoided at all cost.
