A Theme Of Uncontrolled Ambitions In Macbeth By William Shakespeare
What reasonably brainsick actions would somebody do just for their ambitions to turn everyone who she saw was his family, his friends, his allies, against him, Macbeth is a man who has an excessive amount of ambition, he will go to all lengths to get what he wants. He begins as a Scottish Lord who loves his spouse friends with regards to everyone in his country. In William Shakespeare's Macbeth, uncontrolled ambition is accountable for Macbeth's downfall, he began with killing King Duncan so he could take the throne for himself, when the throne was his he sent three men to kill Banquo, his last Dreadful deed was the massacre of MacDuff's family, Macbeth did all this crime just for his selfish ambition. The important thing to remember is to not let oneself lose touch with reality. Macbeth's ambition will only allow him to see concepts that will help him get what he desires.
The emotion running through the beginning of the play is envy when people have envy over someone it makes their wants in life and ambitions more tempting to go through with. King Duncan was a good king, but the amount of envy to get all that power is uncontrollable. Macbeth's power and ambition untimely commenced to steer him down a slippery, homicidal downfall. Macbeth killed King Duncan to achieve rank and killed the Chamberlains to hide his wrongdoing. All of Macbeth's envy is further proved when he says “I have no spur To prick the sides of my intent, but only Vaulting ambition, which o'erleaps itself, And falls on th'other.” This quote shows Macbeth's ambition, and he says that he has no spur to prick it with. This leaves solely Macbeth's ambitions to realize power as justification for the murder. When Macbeth in honest with himself he knows there was no reason to kill the king, Macbeth was full of envy for all that power that was not his to take and he wanted it all for himself. Macbeth wants to fulfill his ambitions compared with all the envy he felt caused him to take action that will lead him to his downfall. Never compare one’s life with others, or else unexpected envy will stem from a dark place.
Apprehension is the emotion that leads to Banqou's death, having anxiety or fear that something bad or unpleasant will happen, will drive someone to do whatever they need to stay clear of danger and keep on pace with their ambitions. Macbeth's ambition made him kill Banquo, an ethical friend. This murder showed simply how Macbeth lost control, he was so compelled at the fact he was king that he did not take a second to realize the actions he was making. At this point, Macbeth started to look at Banquo as a problem to his advancement rather than a friend. His Apprehension towards Banquo worried himself that his children would take the kingdom away from him, out of fear that his one ambition would be lost he sent out three men to kill Banquo for him. All of Macbeth's Apprehension is further proved when he says “For mine own good, All causes shall give way. I am in blood Stepped in so far that, should I wade no more, Returning were as tedious as go o'er.” This quote shows that Macbeth just needs one person to make him something other than happy and he will go to all ends of the earth to get rid of them, all he wants is to allow his ambitions to come true. Macbeth is now happy to know that Banquo is dead he now feels more reassured that no one can take away his power. Macbeth’s fear and Apprehension towards Banquo is no longer holding him back from going head-on in his ambitions. Apprehension and fear towards someone can otherwise trigger a person to do bad things so the fear can be demolished and they can further go on with their ambitions in life. Macbeth's fear of what may come in his way of going throw with his ambitions caused him to do bad things that will eventually lead to his downfall. Fear can be a good thing sometimes it keeps ambitions grounded and does not let ambitions get too unrealistic, One must remember not to let ambition get out of hand.
Resentment is the final emotion in the play. Resentment of bitter indignation can be the biggest trigger for anyone, pure hatred of a person can cause someone to want the worst for another. Macbeth always had a burning passion towards Macduff’s family and Macbeth's ambition has left him to no longer have any humanity left in him, because of this Macbeth just found it fit do demolish Macduff and all he holds dear to him like his family. The witches warn him to beware of Macduff. Macbeth, therefore, takes measures against him such as slaughtering his family while he is in England. All of Macbeth's resentment is further proved when he says, “The Castle of Macduff I will surprise, Seize upon Fife, give to the' edge o' th' sword His wife, his babes, and all unfortunate souls That trace him in his line. No boasting like a fool.” Macduff had it coming for him, having a king with so much power and so much resentment in him is was just a matter of time until Macbeth would send someone off to kill him. When taken resentment and mix it with ambition it will equal a lot of bad Karma. For Macbeth, he also has a component of power so of course, his next action as king would be to kill anyone who is to think poorly of him and because of this action Macbeth took his ambitions it led to his downfall. Never let One’s hatred toward others be the reason to want the worst for them.
Ambition in Macbeth turns into an evil thing; Macbeth did not want to turn into such a possessive person but he only followed the path that he believed would lead him to greatness. Macbeth, unfortunately, fell into a hole that he could not get himself out of, he was stuck in a position from the beginning where he could either continue his life normally or take the dark side of things and commit crimes for what he wants. After the homicide of Duncan, he could only see things to help him succeed in his benefit. Ambition can be a very dangerous thing when it comes to how far someone will go, but what must be taken from a play such as Macbeth and his ambitions is to remember that reality is a big thing, you must make ambitions realistic and if it comes to losing touch with reality one may forget the real meaning of life.
