Adaptation In The Theme Of Transformation
Adaptation is one of the key sub topics that is under the big theme of transformation. Adaptation is described as “to adjust oneself to different conditions, environment”. The process of adaptation is about adapting to a specific environment for a benefit. Animals are a great example of adaptation. Earth has transformed quite a bit from what it was a very long time ago and animals have had to adapt in order to survive.
Adaptation can be as simple as wearing a jacket in the winter to acclimate with the heat and it can be advanced as having venom for self-defence. Adaptation is a skill which is quite crucial to a lot of species of animals in the world. This property is the reason a lot of the animals today have survived. Camels take good advantage of this skill as they live in very hot conditions in the desert. Two of the more essential adaptations for Camels, for instance, are long eyelashes and the ability to store fat. Camel’s eyelashes server a big purpose. They are a shield which ‘block’ sand from blowing into their eyes and blinding their vision. Storing fat is also relatively essential. Being in the desert means that there might be no water for a long distance and or even food for energy. But as the camel can store fat into humps, they can later use that energy when they are in need of it.
Mutation is one topic that is a part of mutation. Mutation is the process which endorses the change in a living organism and adaptation is more of the result or the change required. Mutation and adaptation both help a living organism survive. Mutation is a permanent change whereas adaptation is a temporary change which can be reverted to survive another environment. The process of mutation involves genetic changes. Whereas adaptation is the process of very slight change.
Natural selection is also a huge topic under the theme of transformation. Adaptation drives natural selection. Adaptation modifies traits which are then passed on to offspring’s and spread for the better of their own species. Natural selection always favours those who have a lot more traits which allow them to adapt.
Relative fitness is also vital part of transformation. Relative fitness is “The ability of a population to maintain or increase its numbers in succeeding generations” This type of adaptability associates more with preserving species from going extinct. Relative fitness is how many babies a certain type of species normally has. If a certain organism has more babies than the rest of its counterparts, than that is known as the absolute fitness. The equation for calculating relative fitness is absolute fitness divided by average fitness.
“Both adaptation and transformation refer to processes of change” (O'Brien, 2014). Transforming is defined as “to change in form, appearance or structure; metamorphose”1 Adaptation relates to adaptation because adaptation changes form, appearance or structure in order to survive or accomplish certain goals. Transforming is also a part of adaptation. When animals adapt to a different environment, which normally they are not used to, they transform themselves, to endure the new atmosphere.
Adaptation is quite an important property which is essential to survival and an important attribute that species require. Adaptation also relates and is mixed in with other different attributes like Mutation and adaptation has different parts to it like natural selection and relative fitness which are a process of adaptation. Adaptation relates to Transformation because they encourage the idea of changing. As Charles Darwin said “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change, that lives within the mean available and works co-operatively against common threats. ”
