Advantages & Disadvantages Of Kids Raised On Welfare
Welfare is a government program that assist low income families with food, housing and medical care. Over the years more and more families are living off of a program that was designed to help families that needed assistance, not a permanent solution. Welfare is useful for families that are in-between jobs or are working for a job that puts them in the low income bracket. Will this have an effect on children living in a household where the primary income is welfare? Does this cause a lack of motivation to create a better life for themselves? Good programs to help with Food, Medical Care and Housing Assistance. (Usa.gov, 2018) Food Stamps assistance program gives you a benefits card that is like a debit card. This card allows you to purchase food approved by the government for that month. (Usa.gov, 2018)
Medicare is health insurance provided by the government for families that fall into the low income bracket. Depending on your income it will allow either free or low cost Health Insurance. (Usa.gov, 2018) There are Government own properties that are provided for low income families, seniors and disabled. The Energy Assistant Program helps families afford heating and cooling bills. “Welfare was setup in the 1930s during the time of the Great Depression”. (West's Encyclopedia of American Law, 2018) It was setup to help those suffering from poverty. During this era many people lost their jobs from the stock market crash. “Welfare has been reevaluated several times over the years”. (West's Encyclopedia of American Law, 2018)
Making changes to better the system. When people lose their jobs and can’t find any employment for months. They wonder how they are going to put food on the table, have a roof over their head, and have health care. The different programs that welfare offers, make this possible for everyone. At the same time welfare is meant as a solution for the time being to help you get back on your feet, not a way to live your whole life.
There are people on welfare that are able to work but choose not to. This shows a lack of work ethics. A person could go to the unemployment office to help find a job. Unfortunately, most of these jobs are also considered low income. Some people may feel that it is not worth working, if the government will pay to support them. Children that are raised in a household with good work ethics, will normally display good work ethics when they become adults. Children raised in an environment with bad work ethics, will be less adapted to work as hard. Setting examples for the next generation is important.
A child that never sees a parent work but live a normal life. Will never understand why he or she needs a job to survive. The number of citizens on welfare continue to grow each year. The program has its advantages, but unfortunately there will always people who take advantage of this assistance. Without ways to better regulate this program, citizens will continue to use it as a way to survive without a job. A program that was started to help low income families, became a way of life causing younger generations to do the same.
