Advantages Of Bilingualism

Nowadays, some people in Puerto Rico consider bilingualism a waste of time and knowledge. Indeed, they consider their language of origin as the most important in comparison to the ones from foreign countries. However, the world it’s changing at a pace so rapidly, in which every single day there are new challenges to overcome that requires an open mind to new things.

As a matter of fact, in Europe, the majority of the people speak at least two languages, and it’s pretty noticeable that their lifestyle it’s so much better than ours. Consider France, the majority of the people speak several languages such as Italian, German, Spanish, and even English, so they could have a variety of countries to make commerce with. Equally important, being bilingual has not only helped them with commerce, but with keeping a peaceful relationship with neighbor countries. Although those are general advantages of bilingualism, there are several more advantages of having a bilingual education in your everyday life. In the first place, many advantages of bilingualism are mainly focused in several branches from the world of entertainment. Even though there are several variants, the branch of music it's one of the many in which you could visualize the advantages of bilingualism with ease.

In fact, if you go to a concert from an international singer, there’s a better chance of having the best time in your life, not just by listening to the music, but by understanding the singer’s words. Take my experience as an example, while I was on a Katy Perry’s concert, I could easily laugh at her jokes about how she felt pizza was her lifetime love. Despite the fact, in the world of television the presence of bilingualism it's highly necessary. Sometimes, movies are only available in a language you can't understand, but by enabling the closed captions, the struggle can be avoided. As an example, I'd once rented a movie about life at Russia, but given that I didn’t know any Russian, I enabled the closed captions and understood the plot perfectly. The second advantage of bilingualism it's highly focused on the ease of communication with foreign people. Although some may think that if you do not travel that's highly unlikely, but in the world of college that's not the story. Certainly, in college, there will be times where you will need to work with foreign students and if you want an excellent grade, communication is a key point. For example, when my friend was at the University of New Hampshire, she had to work with a French guy.

However, due to her magnificent french, they did a magnificent work without any struggle of communication. While education it's a great example, traveling portrays pretty well the advantages of bilingualism and communication with others. In fact, when going on a trip, there's a little chance of feeling shy in talking to foreign people, which makes it easier to make new friends. To demonstrate, while I was in England, I went to a cafe and met someone that later on became a good friend of mine. Until today, we talk to each other about our many traditions such as tea time, pizza Friday, and coffee Tuesday. Until now, many advantages of bilingualism were discussed, but the number one spot belongs to the making of job applications. Some people may be skeptical about this, but being bilingual grants you a higher chance of getting a job in comparison to others. Given that bilingualism it's extremely rare, many companies fought for employees like this because it makes them international. As an example, when my brother finished college and applied for several jobs in the United States, he on the next day had three job offers. Even though being bilingual grants you better job offers, at the same time, it gives you the right of asking for more benefits such as a higher pay grade, corporation cellphone, paid vacations or even paid meals while working. As an example, when my father applied for a job in Oklahoma, the corporation gave him a 20% raise on his regular salary and paid vacations.

To sum up, bilingualism is a very wide topic that has so many advantages that it could take up an encyclopedia to discuss them all. During this essay, there were only discussed a small fraction of what was believed were the most important advantages. However, there's a whole vast such as, at the time of applying for a graduate school. Additionally, when looking up for information in a library, bilingualism can come pretty handy. Even though there are plenty of advantages, such as the ones mentioned above, they can be discussed more profoundly at another time. In conclusion, the point of this whole essay was to ensure you that bilingualism is not a waste of time, but actually, it makes you more fit in today's society.
