Advantages of New Media as a Shaper of Interest Groups
Old media, such as TV, radio and newspapers have to follow strict rules, but new media has no fixed rules and it caters for special interest groups and it lets everyone in on world democracy and mostly it is lots of fun. The four articles on Trump’s wall are all from the left side of politics but two are from the new media and two are from the old. Trump’s wall is a commonly discussed topic by all media and there are different opinions on each of the media’s. The four articles stated that they don’t agree with the idea of a border wall.
New media can target different interest groups like sports, cooking and nature. Old media has to target a broader audience. The new media article “ Trump’s border wall could kill off these Jaguars” has a more appealing content for nature lovers. We follow a man who shows us that a wall that will stop humans will also stop endangered species like the jaguars. While this is good information for nature lovers you could also criticise it for manipulating the nature lovers by giving them a really bad point of what could happen if there is a border wall. I like that new media can target special interest groups so that they can engage where they wouldn’t otherwise and this is better for democracy. News sites get paid for forgetting certain parts of the news. Trump’s wall has always been and always will be a massive topic in media that is one of the main reasons why they should always be more than one group telling the story.
Vice News is a new take on media providing magazine-style articles on YouTube. YouTube in media gives much broader access to the digital youth of today. The new media is a good thing giving younger people an easier way of keeping up to date with news like Trump‘s wall without going on a newspaper site and reading an entire article. An example is the Vice News article “US Army is painting Trump’s wall” confronting a group of soldiers painting the wall pressing questions on them with some of those questions giving an unappealing side to the army. This makes interesting viewing. Young people like to see a reaction in the people that they are viewing so they can feel informed and judge the truth themselves.
Like a lot of people my age, I like satire. Like others my age, we like to make fun of world leaders because they have the power to put stupid ideas into reality. The journalist of the Vice News article “US Army is painting Trump’s wall” is making fun of Trump and his attempts to build the wall by showing us that Trump has been taking soldiers off their normal work and giving them paintbrushes to paint the border wall for aesthetics instead of putting them in the protection of their country. It is always good to have a laugh at political leaders, new media being for the young and our enjoyment, giving information and laughs at the same time. It is for the best it is giving the young our future knowledge about what is happening in the world, but more importantly it is showing, not telling you the information which lets you judge the truth for yourself.
New and old media have their benefits and they both serve their own purposes one for feeding the young news and one for the old. Old media often takes a more serious tone on their topics. With Trump’s Wall, Old Media might tell you that it is ridiculous but the new media would take a more humorous side showing, instead of telling, the ridiculousness of the wall. I prefer the new media because the way new media is conveyed makes it really easy to receive information and there is rarely any reading involved. Because new media doesn't have all the rules that old media has to abide by makes their opinions more of their own opinions. Being from the heart makes it more believable and a higher chance that they are telling the truth and it isn’t staged. In my personal opinion, new media is an easier way to consume media for one I’m dyslexic and reading big chunks is hard for me.
