Albert B. Sabin – An Inventor Of Polio Vaccine

Albert B. Sabin the inventor of many vaccines for a various amount of sicknesses, but he is most known for the creator of the vaccine for the polio virus. Albert was born in Bialystok, Poland on August 26th 1906. He moved to the United States with his parents to get away from the hate of Jews in 1921. Albert and his family lived in Paterson, New Jersey where he attended high school and struggled to learn the new language, work various jobs, and achieve in his education. Albert was a very dedicated outgoing Young man during this time and joined several after school activity programs and debate clubs to fill his mind. After high school Albert went to New York University for dental, but later switched into medical school for microbiology. Albert then continued to help people across the world to cure diseases, including the scariest and biggest pandemic in the United States, polio. Albert died on March 3, 1993 due to congestive heart failure.

Albert B. Sabin completed his master’s degree in microbiology at New York City University in 1931. After his university years Albert decided to tackle on the challenge of the polio virus with the staff at Rockefeller New York City in 1934 that effected thousands at the time. Through this time in Rockefeller, Albert was able to make great progress at the start compared to anyone else, he was able to find that not only does the polio virus affect the nervous system, but it also affects the small intestine area. Thus, classifying the polio virus as an enterovirus, a virus that effects the gut. Albert then realized that the virus may be prevented by an oral vaccine due to it being enterovirus. Alberts work was then interrupted because he decided to do his part in the war of the time. Albert joined the US army epidemiological boards virus committee in 1941 during world war 2 to accept missions that ranged from areas in Europe to Africa to help thousands of people with different sicknesses. Such as dengue fever or sand fly fever and created vaccines for all of them.

After his success in World War 2, Albert became even more invested and determined to find a vaccine for polio, focusing on the independent form of polio that can’t reproduce. With the illness growing in infection numbers, Sabin and other researches, Jone Salk, Hillary Koprowski, sought together to prevent the disease to continue growing. They managed to create oral vaccines of weakened forms of the polio virus to the public in 1955 to prevent most problems of the virus, but it didn’t prevent the disease in the intestine.

After Sabin tested his first oral vaccine at Chillicothe Ohio reformatory on himself from 1954 to 1957. After he worked with Russian researches to perfect the vaccine. The vaccine was then able to work inside the intestine to block the polio virus from entering the bloodstream. Later he discovered that the vaccine reproduced rapidly and attacked, putting forms of the virus that attack and protection from the disease.
