Coursera is an online learning platform created by Stanford University professors Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller to offer courses, majors and degrees.

In the past decade, content distribution on the Internet and its consumption on computers and mobile devices has disrupted several industries - newspapers, book publishing, music and movies. Education has joined this list due to the emergence of a large number of open online courses or MOOCs. These courses are available free of charge to thousands of students, ranging from artificial intelligence and computer science to music and poetry appreciation. One of the most active MOOC suppliers today is Coursera, a startup that provides about 200 online courses for 1. 5 million students. It does this by providing a technology platform for 33 educational institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania. Other MOOC programs include Udacity, which originated in Stanford, and edX from Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

What is the new offering?

Due to the lack of specificity of the curriculum design requirements, Coursera will provide us with a very interesting window over time to understand the development of Internet strategies among various institutional partners. Coursera is a technology platform that enables the best institutions to educate the rest of the world. It does not intend to become an educational institution itself. It doesn't make its own content. They rely on some of the world's best coaches to provide content and set academic standards. They distribute amazing content by building relationships with some of the best universities in the world. The edX initiative is more similar in some respects to what Coursera are doing because it is also an institutional effort. It is a small consortium of some of the world's most prominent institutions. Students from all over the world can also access the content of these universities. This arrangement between agencies provides economies of scale because a single platform is an expensive and complex way to develop. Coursera also believe that it is beneficial to have a place where people can find a lot of content. Coursera now have nearly 200 courses and there are more courses. That's why Coursera have 1. 5 million students and the population is growing.

Online learning is a new teaching paradigm. This is not your standard course recording and placement online; this is a real shift in the way we teach. We all study together. Having peer organizations that communicate with each other helps develop good pedagogy and a good way to develop this new paradigm, and this new media is much faster.

How has it changed the market?

This experience is different from the traditional face-to-face educational experience, where students in the public have great access to knowledge that only a small portion of the world's population has so far been able to access. These students can't get the same experience as students at school because they don't get one-on-one contact with the teacher. On the other hand, the availability of these content provides a great support experience for these students. In terms of processing materials, it is still a very interactive experience, not just video. There are many exercises and assessments. In addition, an educational community is created based on students interacting with each other.

At the same time, students on campus can benefit from the same content, have the ability to watch and watch content outside the classroom, then enter the classroom, and have more time to actively learn and interact with the teacher.

For students with sufficient privileges to attend Wharton, Princeton or Stanford, there is a huge opportunity to supplement standard teaching and re-use classroom time for a more meaningful and interactive experience.

However, many students will never get the quality of this education. So you can think of it as a substitute for the education they want. In fact, many of the students who take our courses are already educated professionals. They have a degree or sometimes have an advanced degree. They want to expand their minds and learn new things. Whether it is due to economic or geographic constraints, they will not return to school on official occasions, but this provides a huge learning opportunity.
