Analysis Of My Personal Worldview
A worldview is how an individual or group perceives the world and gives meaning to life. Worldviews are shaped by our values, beliefs opinions and experiences. Personally, I see the world through an agnostic world view, but I see the world as a secular world.
I see the world through an agnostic lens because I lack the knowledge and proof to make a concrete decision towards either the atheistic or theistic world views. I believe that I have not had enough experiences to push me towards either side and together, they have pushed me towards the center of the spectrum. On one hand I believe that a God could not exist because there are so many inhumane things that occur all around the world. If an all-powerful and all-knowing God existed, why would they not do anything to prevent these manmade and natural disasters? For example, why would God not do anything to prevent a school shooting such as the Columbine High School Massacre?
The Columbine shooting is one of the largest school shootings to occur on U. S and was one of the first school shootings to gain worldwide news traction. During this shooting, 15 people died and 24 were injured. If god is truly good, and does exist, then why would he allow such a massacre to happen? Manmade disasters are not the only things that would be preventable. There are countless natural disasters that are happening more and more often. One of the most recent examples is the drought in South Africa. This drought is believed to be one of the worst droughts in human history. This drought has reached the point where if nothing changes, all water will be turned off in the country, except for hospitals, and people will have to go to one of 200 designated areas where they can only get 25 litres per person, per day. According to the World Health Organization, that is only 10 litres above the minimum survivable amount of water that a person can needs. These 25 litres are meant to take care of nearly 4 million people’s daily needs such as taking care of hygiene, staying hydrated, and cooking. If a God truly existed, then why would he allow access to a basic human right and necessity to be restricted? These are factors that push me away from believing in a god.
At the same time, I do not want to completely dismiss the existence of a higher power. If I were to completely deny the existence of a God, then it would be an ignorant decision because I have no proof that he does not exist nor do I have proof that he does exist. While I have never personally witnessed an act of God, I have also do not have proof that they have occurred in the past. This combination of factors leads me to see the world through an agnostic world view.
Another reason that I choose not dismiss religion as a whole is due to my upbringing. I was raised into Islam, and I due to this, I do not want to call it fake. I feel like it would be disrespectful to say that I absolutely disbelieve in the religion. Personally, I am more comfortable staying in the middle.
I believe that the world functions as a secular society. This means that religion gets pushed out of the spotlight, and human values, are concentrated on. Along with that, the world has shifted to looking for life’s answers through science and technology.
I believe the secular worldview is relevant today because individualism is becoming increasingly popular. Individualism is a theory where people favour freedom of action for individuals over collective control. This can be seen with people protesting government control over certain rights such as gay rights and the right to expression. People want to be able to live as their own person, and live free from societies limitations.
Another reason that the secular worldview is seen today is that the government is making decisions that go against religious books to help society rather than enforce the various religious texts. This has been shown when the Canadian government legalized Abortion, as a last choice for people who do not want to have a baby. This made many religious activists mad because it goes against what they believe. These people believe that a baby is alive from the moment that it is conceived, thus having an abortion is murder. This is a clear example of society putting religion to the side and focusing on the needs of humans.
Due to all of these reasons, I personally see the world through an agnostic lens which means that I lack the knowledge needed to make a concrete decision on religion; but, I believe that the world functions as a secular world. This means that the needs of the people are put first in society, while religion is pushed to the side and not focused on as much. This promotes individualism, human rights, and the answers to life are found a decision how you would see the world. If I can keep learning about the beliefs of others, then I can make an informed decision in my own life.
