Analysis Of Parvana Character In The Breadwinner

The Breadwinner, and Parvana’s journey written by the author Deborah Ellis, shows the life of a girl living in Afghanistan where there is war. Her name is Parvana. She is living in Kabul, which is the capital city of Afghanistan taken over by the Taliban. Parvana lives through a very harsh environment that we should never experience. It shows the reader to understand the difficult situations that she faced during the warfare period by taking us deep inside Parvana’s life. She shows her readers how brave, caring and courageous she is in her journey.

Parvana is a very brave girl. Parvana’s father, the only man in their family, was taken away from their home by the Taliban soldiers, Parvana knew they couldn’t live. Men are the primary source for the families in Afghanistan and are in charge for buying food, water and working in a job. The Taliban does not allow women to be in the streets without a man. For example, Parvana decided to cut off her hair and wear boy’s clothes. She didn’t want to do it and preferred her actual appearance more. This shows, she knew that she was the only hope for the whole family and she needed to take difficult steps in order to support her family. This shows Parvana is brave as she is making hard decision in her life.

Parvana is caring because, when she was on her journey to find her mother, she found a baby, without a family or a caregiver. Parvana felt the pain and was sad and decided to bring the baby along. She tried her best to provide all the needs to the baby, such as giving food and water, or a bath. She later encountered two children without parents. She took them too along her journey. This shows, Parvana wants to take care of three people and doing their needs while putting her’s aside. Parvana is caring as she is trying her best to help others.

Parvana is courageous because she was able to take risks and challenges to find her mother. Since her mother left for Mazar, and after Parvana’s father’s death, Parvana felt that something wasn’t right and that she needed to find her mother. Even though knowing the war outside, Parvana went out to find her. She encountered many obstacles but didn’t give up. She kept on running out of food and water, had to hide from the Taliban soldiers a lot of times but at the end, she was brought back with her mother. Parvana’s struggle for finding her mother, and the hardships she faced shows that she is daring.

In conclusion, Parvana’s character shows her audience how brave, caring and courageous she is. She has taught her readers a lesson in her book to take challenges in life, she showed this when she was finding her mother in the paragraph in the book. She also taught her readers to be caring to everyone. She showed this to her readers when she adopted the children. We also learned that we should be brave, as shown in the first paragraph when Parvana cut her hair in order to be able to go outside alone. Parvana taught a lesson to us all that we should try to adapt in our everyday life such as being courageous, brave and kind.
