Analysis Of The Connections Between The Wall-E Movie And Three Different Stories: The Veldt, Multi Vac, And Harrison Bergeron
The Veldt is the story of two parents with two children. Their house does all the chores for them and takes care of their children. The children's favorite thing to do is to play in the nursery. This is a place where their thoughts appear on the walls. But out of nowhere strange things come to be on the walls. African lions keep appearing on the walls, strange screams come from the nursery. The parents decide to lock the nursery, but the kids aren't having it and they lock their parents in the nursery. The lions come to life and end the parents for good.
All the troubles in the world is the story of Multi Vac. A computer that predicts crime and gives out life advice. But one day a man is shown by Multi Vac that is predicted to want to shut down Multi Vac. This prompts a response by the government. The persons son wants help on what to do. He asks Multi Vac and Multi Vac’s response is to infiltrate a building and pull a lever. The kid almost does it before it's revealed that Multi Vac would be shut down had the lever been pulled. The final reveal is that Multi Vac wants to die and is tired of the workload it has to deal with.
Harrison Bergeron is the story of a world where everyone is equal. If you are too smart or too good at something then you must be handicapped. An average family son was taken by the government for being too smart. That boy was named Harrison Bergeron. He escapes prison and rips his handicaps off. He puts a show on live tv of his rebellion and he dances with a great dancer also handicapped. As there rebellion starts they both are shot by the leader of the world and order is restored.
The three stories have a lot of connections between them. You just have to read between the lines. The most obvious example is that in the veldt the parents allowed technology to do its job and in the story All the troubles in the world the world has Multi-Vac do everyone's job. They both go wrong but for different reasons, despite this the messaging behind this remains clear. Don't let technology replace us. Another connection can be made with Harrison Bergeron and All the troubles in the world. They both lived in a strict society were they can’t get away with anything.
In order to identify connections with Wall-E and the stories you first must identify the themes of Wall-E. The most prominent theme is a pro-environment theme that warns us about littering. The environment has more problems every day. We, humans are polluting it all the time. Wall-E warns us about one of the bigger problems. We create too much waste on a daily level and Wall-E tells us this.
Another theme is of becoming too reliant on tech. Humans in Wall-E become very reliant on tech. So much so that they can’t walk anymore. They don’t even notice their surroundings. Wall-E and the Veldt had quite a few connections. One example was that humans had become much too reliant on tech. The humans in Wall-E were so fat because they never moved and just constantly ate. They never participated in physical activities and talked through phone even when right next to each other. In the Veldt George and Lydia let the house do all their chores and that creates a divide in the family. This is a warning for us in case we continue along this path of letting technology do our jobs. Wall-E and All the troubles in the world had quite a few connections. The prime example is robots becoming sentient. Multi Vac was originally made to just do its job but it started to have a mind of its own. The same thing happens in Wall-E. When Wall-E gets reset he goes back to just doing his job. Overtime they both obtained intelligence and were capable of making decisions. They even were capable of feeling human emotion like stress and love. Once again it also reminds us not to get to reliant on tech.
Wall-E and Harrison Bergeron have some hidden connections sparked all over the place. One example is the way people have complete trust in their government. In Wall-E people are not worried that there government is doing the right thing. In Harrison Bergeron the government has been doing bad things for so long people thinks it's okay. Harrison like Wall-E has people think beyond the norms the government forced on them.
What is the bigger picture? These stories and Wall-E have a few bigger morals. One moral is a warning against us getting too reliant on technology. The other is that we need to stop corrupt governments and politicians. Wall-e clearly shows unfortunate effects of technology and so does all the troubles in the world and the Veldt. Governments in Wall-E, Al, the troubles and Harrison Bergeron are corrupt.
In conclusion of this part, Wall-E has a great deal of connections to the stories. It clearly gives a warning and a moral. All stories have tie ins to Wall-E. Like how we are becoming too reliant on tech, that we should care for AI and that we have to must trust in being told what to do.
