When human resources knows what the goals of the organisation are, they can work in acquiring the right kind of people to fill in the right positions.

Challenges for Strategic human resource management

New development in technology

The use of new technology such as talent networks, crowdsourcing and social media always show promise of more productivity and flexibility but it will make employee management and team building more challenging. With Silverstar Logistics wanting to open a new container terminal which is equipped with the latest state-of-the-art cranes and weighbridges that will assist with the maintenance of the fleet.

The new technology implication will require the human resource department to offer training and development for those employees who will be operating the new machinery.

The impact of the economy

Although some country is economic indicators show improvement, it still has a very big toll on organizations budgets and it may influence hiring strategies and other human resource decisions. Silverstar Logistics is looking to increase their fleet of trucks by 50% and their drivers by 70% in the next 5 years.

All these goals will require Silverstar Logistics to obtain at least a 25% market share because these are very ambitious goals. If they will be hiring more drivers, they have to bear in mind that with the economy not being favourable, this will need large capital investment in order to even obtain at least 20% of the trucks they are want to add to their fleet.

Demographic changes

The population change have created a huge impact on employment and human resource practices. These changes include an aging workforce, multi-generational employees and increased cultural diversity. The challenge of having a large workforce in the business is that there may be cases of nepotism within the drivers because of the nature of the family as well as parental roles.

The aging workforce will be a bigger challenge because truck driving has physical strain to the body and the elderly will require extra care than the younger employees, which will result in a slower service delivery rate than the usual.
