Analysis Of Three Main Components Of Business Management
In my scope of work, I desire to communicate and work with everyone related to my assigned job. Instead of carrying out my duties within my level, I love to be involved in the actual execution and seeing the project through. I also enjoy the process of learning by seeking improvement in my job. I believe that it is worth gaining new skills to improve the capabilities in my work.
Introduction
A successful organisation is built upon effective business management with the involvement of a manager. Management is the integration and planning of resources towards objective. Organisations need to be clear with their goals for managers to guide employees in working towards it. To fulfil these goals, three main topics that have been identified are workplace diversity, strength and weakness of manager’s personality and importance of having good emotional intelligence.
To function as a manager, we have to be the best of who we are and keep learning and improving our strengths. There is no good or bad manager; it is a journey of learning to improve as a manager. To begin with, I believe that the most important aspect of a manager is the ability to bring a diverse group of employees together and work towards our goal. Building a trusting environment will engage employees to think of innovative ideas and lead to long term success by making the most of their abilities.
Workplace diversity
As data research by Rocio Korenzo during her speech at TED Talk on how diversity makes teams more innovative, companies having wider diversity in their staffing are more innovative and more innovative companies also consist of a more diverse leadership. It was indicated that having just 10% of women in leadership positions is not enough. Instead, at least 20% is required to see a more significant improvement in innovation. In reference to this artefact, it is well applicable to my studies. Similar to diversity in any business context, diversity is inevitable and essential for group projects. For example, having group members of different genders or nationalities can make the team much more creative. With diversity, a team holds different perspectives and knowledge to come up with the best fit solution to the problem at hand. In relation to my future career as a manger, I have understood the importance of diversity. However, there is a risk of bringing together all employees of different diversity without the necessary skills of team bonding. Hence, more attention is needed to take into account of current team diversity at any point in time and to include people with different background whenever necessary. Even with diversity in the workplace planned, success of the team can only be achieved when team management is effective. We need to value and manage diversity through building an inclusive environment such that maximum potential can be harness from this diversity.
Diversity can pose a problem in a group when communication becomes an issue. With a diverse group, there could be friction in communication. Personally, I have experienced conflicting viewpoints during group discussion. I do agree that this is inevitable and even beneficial to have such constructive conflicts so that our team is able to un-earth underlying problems and foresee the impacts based on our decision. To manage such issue, we have to first of all, acknowledge the different viewpoints. Next, we will need to further brainstorming and list out the possible consequences of the choices. Members will need to agree to communicate with each other and analyse further before reaching to an agreement on the final choice.
Manager’s personality
A manager’s personality can influence employees and is often associated with valuable exchanges which build good relationships. Thus knowing one’s personality type will be useful in improving relationships as I would be able to know more about my strengths and weakness.
ESFJ (The Consul) is most likely to know what behaviour is expected from people in certain situation and knowing how to behave in them. For example, as a manager, one has to lead the team with effective management and communication. One of the trades of consul is being good at connecting with others. A manager has to make a connection with everyone for the team to work together. Good connection encourages feedbacks from employees and tasks assigned by manager will be carried out more efficiently. A weakness of Consul Type is that one tends to be inflexible and fear of making big changes. However, to be effective, one has to be willing to adapt to changes and dare to think differently from others. Thus, it has come to my awareness that during a group project discussion, it is important to listen to everyone’s opinion and be flexible in improvising. Employees with empathic managers make lesser complaints and the daily progress was strongly linked to the positive affect between employees and managers. To show empathy to people, one must be able to stand in someone’s shoes and see things from their perspectives. As a manager, we have to differentiate between content and emotions. Sometime it is more suitable to reply to emotions than the actual words. Empathic listening is necessary to come up with an effective solution.
Emotional Intelligence
A good manager with high emotional intelligence is more efficient, well-liked and overall performance of the team will increase.
Emotional intelligence can also be used to motivate employees and it is important when pursuing a positive outcome. Emotional intelligence is closely related to motivation and is useful when coming up with solution to reduce stress and burnout of employees. Thus, it is a point for my future career in management to pay more attention of the emotions and motivation of employees. In studies, motivation is needed in learning and improving ourselves in order to prepare for future job. After completing the quiz and obtaining a score of 20, I understand that emotional intelligence involves detecting emotions of employees and self-awareness. A manager with good self-awareness will be able to predict the responses of others and be prepared for the potentially tricky issues. It includes knowing the difference between showing empathy and sympathy and to come up with a development plan for them.
Conclusion
Management is the key to any organisation’s development. Effective management comes with the need for workplace diversity, a suitable manager’s personality and emotional intelligence. Considering the research by Rocio Korenzo during her speech in TED Talk on workplace diversity, we have seen that sufficient diversity have yet to be implemented when more diversity can help to push innovation. Innovation leadership cultivates strategic fit and enhances performance of the company. Together with technological advancement, companies must come up with innovative ideas and products to meet market needs. In terms of the personality of a manager, it is important for one to know more about his or herself to discover strength and weakness. From there, one has to acknowledge his weakness and adapt to improve management skills. Emotional intelligence is another less discussed topic in management and yet crucial. Emotional intelligence is an important contributor to team management. It is the core of leadership which managers need to understand and be able to inspire everyone.
Management is not as simple as it looks as it ranges from every individual. Not only the employee to do his best in his duty of work, the manager has to create inclusive environment and effective communication channels for his employees. Only then can employees of different expertise focus on their part and complete their part of work and combine to the completion of a project/product. While employees take charge of their work, it is the manager’s responsibility to oversee and connect teams together.
A manager’s responsibility starts from the hiring process. Before hiring, managers need have a clear understanding of company goals and its need on diversity and the types of diversity required. However with diversity in place, it can pose a problem in a group when communication becomes an issue as it could cause friction. Thus it would require good interpersonal skills to bring everyone together and to manage this diversity. Building inclusive workplace is important as employees will be more motivated and can contribute positively. Knowing that not all personality is suitable to carry out the role of a manager, I have reflected upon myself that while my personality may not be the best suited for a manager role I can make use of what I have learnt from this course to make adjustment on the actions due to my weakness. Since a manager need have a very clear mind-set on the goal and connecting everyone together.
