Application Of Daniel F. Chambliss’s Ideas About Excellence In Education
Daniel F. Chambliss was once a Professor at Hamilton College. He researched the world of swimmers for a year and a half conducting various unprecedented sociological studies. He actually lived with several coaches, attended their practices and team meetings. He interviewed over one hundred world class and national athletes. He is known for publishing in Sociological Theory, he described an accurate and definitive picture of how excellence is developed. Chambliss believed that talent could diminish the sense of true work which is the main ingredient of excellence. He also believed that excellence requires qualitative differentiation, motivation, determination, and a great attitude. Whether you’re in middle school, high school or college it can be hard to be successful. Although, with qualitative differentiation you can succeed with your education excellence at any level.
I believe everything could be easier if we imagined school as a haven for creating ourselves and wanting to learn more, instead of just hoping for a passing grade. If we apply Chambliss’ ideas to be an excellent student we must have a great attitude, studying technique and discipline. I feel that if you have a positive attitude it can make then situation better. Positive attitudes in school can help students stay focused on their goal and would create an enjoyable environment to learn. It would also create motivation within the campus. When you have an opportunity to make yourself better, don't sit around or get distracted, you should enhance your capabilities. There are many things that can assist you to be more positive in school. For example, learning your strengths, strong confidence, great habits, and positive people. Positive attitude alone is not enough to be successful but it is certainly necessary and is well worth developing. Some students seem to breeze through school, while some others struggle. I always just thought the smart ones were just born that way. However, I do believe that having the ambition to do well, self-discipline and a positive mind set, is the main thing you need to possess to be successful. Developing a technique that works best to help absorb as much information as possible is a good strategy too. Continuously reviewing notes to refresh your memory, practice your problems.
Don’t Procrastinate! Don’t put off your work till the last minute, get that extra credit. Learn your instructor, find study partners to study with and minimize your distractions and interruptions. Turn off your Cell phone! Television, radio, and roommates can be distracting too. You should always study in a quiet space and at a time that is best for you when you are most alert. Although studying is of the utmost importance, be sure you make time for yourself and the things you enjoy doing to keep a positive attitude. Lastly, a student must learn to be self-disciplined. Without any self-discipline, a student’s life would be chaotic. For example, when you have a big test the next day and your friends want to hang out, you have to have the discipline to stay in and study otherwise you should be prepared for a grade that will not be satisfactory. Completion off assignments in a timely manner is also an example of self-discipline. Having Self Discipline usually affords you making the right decisions in school and in every aspect of life. For example, avoiding peer pressure with so much use of alcohol and illegal drugs that is so widely spread throughout many college campuses. Avoiding this takes extreme self-discipline.
You can apply Chambliss idea in many different ways to make you become excellent at whatever you do. I am a new first time mother and this is an aspect of my life, I want to achieve excellence. Having a positive attitude means everything to me. Not having a positive attitude affects my entire flow and passes right down to the rest of the family. When I am upset, not only does my spouse feel it but my child feels it too. When I’m happy or excited about something, my baby is thoroughly thrilled about it too, even if she don't understand. To keep a positive attitude I remind myself how blessed I am and that there are so many people in the world who wished they had it as good as me. I exercise, try to eat healthy, limit chaos as much as possible, and surround myself with only positive people. Techniques to motherhood are endless. Every mother has their own way of raising their child. There are positive techniques and negative techniques to teaching your child. I personally believe in disciplining my child and teaching her right from wrong. I have seen the way some kids are raised these days, with no respect for their elders and no manners whatsoever. I believe that I must be a good role model and practice what I preach. My child is influenced more by me than anyone else that comes into her life. Being a member of church, and spending time with God is important to me. I believe living by faith, showing love, kindness, will help lead my child in the right direction. Not only do I show m y daughter enough love but, I also teach her tough love. Tough love is to show her that bad behavior comes with consequences. One of the most important values I instill in my son is self-discipline. I believe self-discipline should be a continuing process during a child’s lifetime. I try my best to create clear expectations and consequences by showing lots of affection, rewarding good behavior, taking away privileges, communicating and giving time-outs. I believe if I don’t teach my son self-discipline, many issues could arise which ultimately leads to behavioral issues. My son will be aware that he needs to possess self-discipline in order to have self-control, happiness, and a less stressful life.
In conclusion, Chambliss used accurate ways to describe his points. However, he didn’t consider all the possible effects that could play a role in the result of a individuals success. Chambliss proved a key point with his idea regarding excellence. I strongly suggest to others that are pursuing their goal to apply qualitative differentiation in his or her life.
