Betsy Ross, The Woman Who Created The First American Flag

“Today the American knight holds the commercial supremacy of the world- Betsy Ross”. Ross is one of the most important women in American history because she created the first American Flag. This flag becomes our country's symbol of freedom and peace. She was the first woman to create the original design of the American Flag that we still use and have modified many times over the years. Betsy Ross is now one of the most cherished women in American history, because of her contribution to this country.

Betsy was a very busy woman, she was a famous seamstress. She was sitting sewing in her shop one day with her girls around her, several gentlemen entered. She recognized one of these as the uncle of her deceased husband, Col. George Ross, a delegate from Pennsylvania to Congress. She also knew the husband form and features of the dignified, yet graceful and polite commander in Chief, who, while he was yet Colonel Washington had visited her shop both professionally and socially many times (a friend caused by her connection with the Ross family) they announced themselves as a committee of Congress, and stated that they had been appointed to prepare a flag and asked her if she thought she could make one to which she replied, with her usual modesty and self-reliance, that “she did not know but she could try; she had never made one but if the pattern were shown to her she had no doubt of her ability to do it. She was also accompanied by George Washington asking her to make this flag, with six-pointed stars and Besty suggested a five-pointed star instead of six because it looks nicer and it was easier to make in her defense. Betsy went right to work on this flag and about a year later the very first American Flag was created.

On June 14, 1777, America’s second Continental Congress passed a resolution approving the design of a flag to represent the newly formed United States of America (Encyclopedia). Also on June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress voted to make the stars and stripes the national flag of the United States. 1775 a new official flag design approved. It provided for thirteen stars and thirteen stripes, reflecting the addition of Vermont and Kentucky to the union after the war. Fun Fact! This flag flew over Fort McHenry, Francis Scott Key immortalized it in “The Star Spangled Banner”. When this flag was approved this is now our flag to represent the United States of America. We still have this flag in 2019, from 1777, but we have modernized our flag to have fifty stars and thirteen stripes. Yes, it may not be the original design but we still thank Betsy Ross for making the very first American Flag and for taking the time from her days to make the flag we still have to this very day and honor by saying The Pledge of Allegiance. When we say this pledge we say that we stand as an independent country and that we are republican and are one nation under God and individual for liberty and justice, and when we have this it is for all Americans.

This account of the creation of our first flag was first brought to light in 1870 by one of Betsy’s grandson. Because of Betsy’s flag, America has cherished her work for years and is one of the most recognized and cherished women in United States history. Betsy Ross sewed the first American Flag. When we view the flag we think of liberty, freedom, pride and Betsy Ross. The American Flag flies on the moon sits atop Mount Everest, is hurtling out in space. The Flag is how America signs her name. It is no surprise that Betsy Ross has become one of the most cherished figures of American history. It was such a great honor to have an amazing woman such as Betsy Ross in our American history because without Betsy we would not have such amazing flag… This was her mark on, American history, to have a symbol of freedom and peace also to honor the American Revolution. When the design was approved she was proud of herself because that means, when you put in hard work and effort you can accomplish anything, and that is what Betsy did. Even though she was still upset about her deceased husband she was asked to make something, and she did it even when things got rough or hard she did not give up. That is also what made her one of the most cherished women in American history, for not giving up on the flag we were asked to make. Betsy will forever be a part of American history because of her contribution to this country and how it was hard but to never give up on anything even if you are in a rough patch. But to still try and you will succeed anywhere you are going in life and if you do, you may end up in a good place or ending up being famous worldwide.

Betsy Ross is now one of the most cherished women in American history because of her contribution to this country. Ross is one of the most important women in American history because she created the first American Flag. This flag becomes our country's symbol of freedom and peace.
