Book Review Of One Nation America Remember September 11, 2001 By Robert Sullivan
The book is greatly about the afterlives of the brave people that saved the people in the towers. The aftermath of the attack. Book goes into great detail about the people involved with the terrorist attack. The book even shows that how dogs were used to help look for people inside the burning buildings.
On September 11, 2001 a tragic event happened in New York City at the World trade center (Twin Towers). September 11 in the morning passenger planes were hijacked then flown into the twin towers. It took less than 2 hours and the 110 story building collapsed and killing 5000 people then event was over. This day is the deadliest day in American history , it cost more lives than pearl harbor and D-day.
The Twin towers was designed by Minoru Yamasaki. He was a second generation Japanese American, was born into a poor family. In Seattle of 1912 he worked for 17 cents at a salmon cannery to get to University of Washington. When the Depression hit he was like other people he went to New York. Where he landed a job to design the Empire state building. At the time the Empire state building was the tallest building in the world. Which this job gave people a view on him that made people be attracted to his work because of the attractiveness he went fo with his part. Yamasaki got hired to be lead designer of the World Trade Center, he was having trouble to decide which one he wanted then decided to build two of the same. The Twin Towers took hundred thousand ton of steel that will be lifted up with imported hydraulic cranes from Australia dubbed kangaroo cranes.
At 5;45 Mohamed Atta and Abdulaziz Almonari went through security in Portland, Maine. George W bush wakes up at 6 am everyday to do his daily routines. At 8:47 am airline flight 11 crashes into the north tower. 9:02 am flight 175 crashes into the south tower. 41 minutes later flight 77 hits the pentagon. 10:28am both towers are collapsed and first responders are rushed to find survivors. When flight 175 hits the north tower 6 mins later all New York airports are closed and sterilizes air space over city. History was mad on this day as the FAA ordered all nonmilitary planes to ground and canceled all US flights. Rescuers worked to fine 150,000 people with 50,000 workers and up to 100,000 people as visitors. While first responders are look for survivors the New York stock exchange is evacuated and closed, soon after this all financial markets around the US are closed at 10:30 New York Governor declares state of emergency.
James Nachtwey lives in Manhattan and is a war photographer. On September 11 he was at the right time and had his camera. James got the destruction from the plane striking the north tower. Trying to get closer he missed the south tower getting hit. He reached the towers in minutes camera in his hand taking pictures on his way. James felt anger about what happen putting emotions into the picture he takes.
Since 911 there has been many different poems, books, and songs for the tragic event. Bottomless Tuesday by Gordon Parks, describe the event using metaphor describing the horror of the event. The poem rallied Americans, it made fun of the US Government for know this could've happen and it did happen and killed thousands of innocent people and its the government fault. Then the finally paragraph it tries to bring us all together and try to find love and says to forget this event and move on and fined love for that’s what god made us for.
Another poem Extravagant Spirits by Maya Angelou describes the thanks she has for the people that volunteer there time to save the people in the horrific event. It goes into great detail of what they had to go through to save others. And how millions of people are impressed and gratefully for their sacrifices. She says “We and our futures belongs to them”. This sentence hits a lot of people in the heart knowing that many policemen, firefighters, dogs, and medics saved thousands of people.
Dust in the city did not clear up for a while, smoke did the same. 4 building collapsed one being a church and a bridge collapsed, most of the building around the area were damaged. Dust covered everything causing the beauty of New York to disappear. People woke up on the 12th and noticed the nightmare was not gone, people traveled out of the city to see the aftermath from a far and were stund. The disaster covered 16 acres while the debris was 1.4 tons. The first month of clean up only 291,879 tons was cleaned up all being hauled out of the city with dump trucks costing America 200 million dollars on the clean up process. The process took a whole year and cost 5 billion dollars.
300 dogs were used to help find people in the aftermath. Dog came around the world to find survivors. Many had to travel for long periods of time looking for people. There were medics for dogs on the disaster just like there was for humans. Most dogs are trained for this moment and are trained in stressful situations. Dogs and they’re handler are trained for mostly a year getting to know each other and knows how one another acts. Many dogs didn’t make it out and didn’t find people but the fact that they came out and looked for people amazes people how much animals can help people and the world.
One Nation America Remember September 11, 2001 by Robert Sullivan was a great book that describes the events of the day and the days and years after the horrifying event. This book includes lots of respect for the men and women that volunteered to save thousands of people. It shows the aftermath of 911 and the tragedy of what some people went throw losing loved ones. This is a great book and highly recommend for people that don’t like much reading and like the pictures of 911.
