Comparison Of The Book Bloody Chamber And The Movie Django Unchained


This essay is a comparison between Angela Carter´s book The bloody chamber and Quentin Tarantino´s movie Django Unchained. In the essay oppression against women in relation to African Americans will be addressed. The essay will mainly address the view of the woman towards man and how gender stereotypes are linked to this topic. Lastly why violence is used as much as it is used in the two chosen fictions which will be compared in this essay.



Angela Carter

Angela Carter formerly, Angela Olive Stalker, was born in Eastbourne in 1940 however was unfortunately evacuated as a child to Yorkshire where she was raised by her grandmother. Carter started her career to be a journalist at the University of Bristol where she studied medieval literature. After getting rejected to Oxford Education to work as a journalist, she, therefore, began her work as a journalist at The Croydon Advertiser where she among other things did Shadow Dance and the Magic Toyshop.

After her success in the journalism business, she traveled thru the United States, Asia, and Europe, and received inspiration and information which has affected her success. She stayed in Japan where she among other things wrote The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman. She has rewritten and written many stories, however her most remarkable work which I will be comparing to Django Unchained is The Bloody Chamber which has both gained her success and criticism. She was using a feministic perspective to stories instead of the most common story structure where the men played a central role in the stories.

The Bloody Chamber

The Bloody Chamber is a collection of stories which Angela Carter has rewritten into a feministic perspective. It was published in the United Kingdom in 1979 and have since then received a large amount of attention for her excellent work and criticism against stereotypes.

Quentin Tarantino

Quentin Tarantino was born in 1963 in Knoxville, Tennessee and is one of Americas most known film directors. During his career, he has directed films like Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Django Unchained which are well-known films in the film industry.

He is often recognized for the rough and often bloody violence mixed, with black humor he is using. This has earned Tarantino several award nominations including the Oscar price. However, his career did not begin in the spotlight but after dropping out of high school, Tarantino worked as a janitor at a film theater.


The purpose of this essay is to analyze and compare The Bloody Chamber with another fiction. We will then compare a few points such as gender stereotypes and racism. we will also present academic information that will support our claims. The purpose of this analysis is also to learn how the chosen literature is linked to today's society


The main method that would be the basis for the entire analysis is literary sources both from the internet and books that is the actual the bloody chamber and the information on the analysis to be analyzed should be collected through source-critical branching, which in turn will lead to a result. I will also need to compare literary devices such as imagery and personification.


There are limitations on source management because I need to set limits for myself on amount of sources that I will be using since the text would be over the chosen length limit of how long the analysis should be. This will also limit me in the number of information that will be included in the text. This will result in my arguments will be well built and compelling but will be information poor.

The time we have is also limited because we have fairly precise submission dates that will result in the text probably being to some extent, be stressed out. This will result in a less well-written analysis then if we would have had extended time.


Django Unchained

In 1858, two white slave owners named Ace and Dicky Speck walk a gathering of African American slaves through the Texas heat. The Bloody Chamber

In The Bloody Chamber, a rich Marquis marries the heroine and was moving into his house within short notice. The story then ends with the heroine has inherited all the Marquis wealth as she spends it to giving to charity and rebuilds the school for the blind. She now lives a happy life outside of Paris where she has started a music school.


In Tabitha R. Where Carter is trying to get a more evenly set between women and men out through a feminists perspective while in Django so want it sooner change and take up the rough similarity between black and white in the past and present American. What does then define why these differences occur in the film and the book?

According Hollis Lynch in his article African Americans (2009) African Americans are generally the relatives of slaves or individuals who were brought from their African countries by the power to work in the New World America by different strong powers that colonized in Africa. Tarantino has received a lot of criticism about the filming of the film and what is included in it. However, it has had a strong influence in a positive direction, since not so many films that are created are about this subject

Unlike The bloody chamber, the change has already taken place to a certain extent since equality between women and men has become closer together in a way. However, one still sees a difference and that women are not completely equal to men in, for example, their salary and so on. Carter, however, shows that it is not really so then when women are physical appearance is degrading and the men are, for example, big and powerful. The book is also told from a woman's point of view, which is what Carter wants to bring about how women, for example, are seen as sex objects. unlike Carter's book that uses a lot of imagery when much of what happens in the book is described in great detail and one can really imagine what is happening, it is not possible to compare Django in the same way since it is not written down what happens but is shown to the spectators and you can form their own opinion. Tarantino films women in such a way that they are filmed in a so-called medium shot where you want to achieve where you want to see their expression and body language and are reinforced by filming from the top in most cases, which in turn wants to convey that the characters are powerless. While the men in the film are often filmed in the middle of or from the top. That is, they have a meaning full action and that they are big and show themselves strong. Therefore, one can connect that Django Unchained and The Bloody Chamber want to convey the same thing about female stereotypes even if the action differs and that Django is mostly about African American history and you also find tracks for what Carter wants to convey and criticize.

Tarantino is known for using violence and graphic violence. In Django, Unchained shootouts occur very often, where cowboys show painful expression when they get shot and falls and tumbles to the ground. This is a vicious scene, possibly as brutal as a scene can get seeing a person getting murdered. Murder and graphic picture appear in Tarantino film. What has changed, however, is the manner by which this savagery is displayed.
