Comparison Of The Veldt And There Will Come Soft Rains By Ray Bradbury
Ray Bradbury enlightens his readers with a very important message in relation to our nearing dystopian future and what it holds for us, where “The Veldt” discusses how technology is taking over parental roles while, “There Will Come Soft Rains” discusses the fact that the advancement of technology isn’t going to save us from our malicious subsequent.
Firstly, when it comes to “There Will Come Soft Rains”, Bradbury has managed to use pathetic fallacy in order to enhance his text where, pathetic fallacy refers to the attribution of human feelings and responses to inanimate things or animals where he consistently refers to inanimate objects. Although in “The Veldt”, Bradbury has referred to the shift in power between parents and automation. Now, the veldt indicates open, uncultivated grassland in southern Africa which is portrayed through the nursery as the technology used is extremely developed and is portrayed as a threat, therefore setting a fearsome tone for the reader.
Furthermore, in relation to the narrative voice, Bradbury has benefited from a third person perspective where the house has indeed become a character which was manifested through the story “There Will Come Soft Rains”, where on the opposite hand “The Veldt” was written in first person view as various dialogues were incorporated throughout the story. Bradbury once said “I’m not really a science fiction writer, I’m a writer of fairy tales and modern myths about technology”, this exceptional quote gives the reader a tremendous perception of Bradbury’s vision based on the impact of technology on our future generations.
In addition to the theme, Bradbury has managed to acquaint his readers with two themes of concern which were conveyed through 2 divergent yet quiet similar pieces of text, one being “The Veldt” which portrays the intention of automation taking over parental roles, and the other being “There Will Come Soft Rains” which mainly discusses the fact that the advancement of technology isn’t going to salvage us from our nearing dystopian future. Now, when it comes to “The Veldt” Bradbury has managed to conceive this atrocious site, which portrays the intention of automated technology taking over parental roles also known as the “nursery” where he said “I just want you to look at it, or call a psychologist in to look at it”. Although when it comes to “There Will Come Soft Rains” Bradbury has created this house which is fully automated “At eight thirty the eggs were shriveled and the toast was like stone” where he was basically able to predict our dark future regarding the advancement of technology which would lead us to our malicious subsequent.
In conclusion Bradbury has managed to portray his point of view through the use of various aspects of literary devices such as theme in order to clearly state his point of view where Bradbury was able to prove the fact that the evolution of automated technology isn’t going to get us anywhere in life in fact if we keep relying on technology, that will definitely lead humanity to a point of decay.
