Comparison Of Two Characters - Patsy Barnes From "The Finish Of Patsy Barnes" & Joby From "The Drummer Boy Of Shiloh"
In this comparison and contrasting essay I will be talking about two characters from two different stories and how they are similar or different. The two characters I will be using are Patsy Barnes from the story The Finish of Patsy Barnes and Joby from The Drummer boy of Shiloh. Both of these characters are the same because they both have something to fear, but the difference is that Patsy Barnes fears of his mom dying to a pneumonia while Joby is about to go to war with an army he has to lead.
These two characters are the same as each other because of their similar character traits. Both of them are scared and are fearful for something they might lose such as their life or a close relative. In the Finish of Patsy Barnes, the text tells me that Patsy’s mother has pneumonia and Patsy fears his mother might die from this disease I can support my answer by citing text evidence on pg 106 ”They had been living in Dalesford for a year nearly, when hard work and exposure brought the woman down to bed with pneumonia. They were poor --too poor even to call in a doctor.” I can cite text evidence to support my answer in The Drummer Boy of Shiloh on pg 114”. Me thought the boy, I got only a drum, two sticks to beat it, and no shield.
There wasn’t a man-boy on this ground tonight who did not have a shield he cast, I can see that he fears dying because he is completely defenseless. They both are young at the age of 14 as well as Joby and Patsy Barnes are are also seen as the main characters in their stories. I can cite text evidence to support that they are both 14 years of age on pages 105,113 Patsy has just turned fourteen this year and Joby also turned fourteen recently. He learned strange things about horses, and fine, sonorous oaths that sounded erie on his young lips, for he had only turned into his fourteenth year.” “It was a solemn time and a solemn night for a boy just turned fourteen” Patsy Barnes and Joby in the same manner both have to overcome very difficult conflicts. Patsy Barnes and Joby don’t just have similarities the two characters also differ on where the time of the story took place.
Patsy Barnes is in Africa while Joby is in Tennessee during the civil war. I can cite text evidence to support my answer on pages 104,116.” Patsy’s mother had found her way to Little Africa when she had come from Kentucky.” However Joby is in the middle of the Civil War “The Battle of Shiloh was sparked when the southern Confederate army suddenly attacked the northern Union troops near Shiloh Church in Tennessee on April 6,1862.” Patsy Barnes has a conflict to save his mother from dying to a disease on the contrary Joby has to be the heart of the army and lead the soldiers into war after the general dies. I can cite text evidence to support my answers on pages 106,117”. But I can’t lay hyeah long, doctah case I ain’t got nuffin to go on. Well, take your choice:the bed or the boneyard.” ”Do you know now you’re general of the army when the general’s left behind?”
Patsy from The Finish of Patsy Barnes and Joby from The Drummer Boy of Shiloh are both dynamic characters seeing as the two have a big internal changes of heart from becoming fearful to being hopeful. They also have their differences seeing as Patsy is hopeful that his mom will now survive with all the doctors aiding her and Joby feels more confident to lead the army after talking to the general. The main characters in these two stories both are alike and different by their position, setting and personality.
