Crime In America: Causes & Ways To Solve The Problem
When someone ask me what could make America great again; I think it needs to start with our crime. Stricter prison sentences could do many things to make our country a better place. There are too many people in this world that are not getting enough punishment for their crime they commit. I believe if there were stricter prison sentences that the crime rate would decrease tremulously. Also, it makes going to jail more frightening to the citizens. Another reason stricter prison sentences should be enforced is because it makes the victims safer. When perpetrators are waiting for trial or court, and they bail out it is a danger for our community.
The only issue is that when people stay in jail longer it gets overpopulated quickly. Overpopulation also causes more cost and brings up more issues.Logically, if prisoners knew that prison sentences were stricter; people would rethink their actions in criminal situations. The more they send prisoners to jail longer the crime rate starts to drop a lot more. New York Time wrote “That the prison populations grew by 5.2 percent in 1997. Justice Department says that the crime has been dropping overtime. In local jails and in state and federal prisons rose to 1,735,842 in 1997 up from 1.1 million in 1990.”
With prison rates rising, it will show the citizens of the United States that they are just not letting people get away with everything. I think especially perpetrators with children would rethink their crime they committed if they knew that would be away from the children longer. Also, with longer sentences and harsher punishments crime rate would drop. There would not be so many people getting raped or abused if they knew they would never be able to get out of jail again. When people are waiting for court for sentencing, I think it should not be allowed for them to bail out of jail. It is unfair to put someone in jail for a dangerous crime and just let them go while waiting on the court system. I think stricter prison sentences would “make America great again” by decreasing crime rates.
Another great idea to make America better, is that if we have longer and stricter prison sentences it would be safer for victims. I think even if we had early guilt court it would reduce court delays. It is mentally easier for a victim the quicker they forget about the situation. While waiting one to two years, before finding out their pleas is way more stressful to the victim emotionally and physically. Also, with earlier pleas if they were innocent it would help the perpetrators too. It can be beneficial to both people. It makes the emotional and mentally state worst on victims if they are having to anxious watch their backs. It could possibly lead to mental illness because of anxiety. Crime survivors speak: “That one in four people have been victims of crime in the past ten years.”
Also, victims think that protectors should have to go places beyond prison. It is great for them to go to rehabilitation, mental health treatment, drug treatment, community supervision, or even community service. Victims want them to get punishment but also to have treatment to fix the probably long term. Crime survivors speak: “There was research done that says that one out of four victims that were involved in a violent crime seem unsafe in the neighborhood. Victims after crimes feel unsafe, and research shows victims in violent crimes feel more unsafe. Victims also experience a lower quality of life as a the result of a crime. Eight out of ten people are being victims experience more stress and trauma.” Crime is a very traumatic for any individual that has to go through a situation. It is especially worst when it is a violent crime. It is even worse for victims that are repeat victims. It is known, that repeat victims usually suffer from mental illnesses, depression, and anxiety. Even repeat victims, can suffer from PTSD, which post traumatic stress disorder. Also, it is hard for victims that have witnessed other victims getting abused and harmed.
Crime is a horrible thing that people commit on a daily basis. It changes the people lives instantly so always think before you act.Longer prison sentences sounds great from the victims safety and for the protectors to be away from society. Overcrowded is caused by the crime rates being so low. When this occurs, it makes it harder for the prisons to meet the needs of the perpetrators. These things include, meals each day, healthcare, and basic human needs. It causes social tension to go up in overcrowded areas. People are more likely to fight and argue, which causes them to stay longer when they act up. Officer safety is more at a risk with more prisoners each one has to watch over. Also, overcrowding causes more people to be together. With too many people together, it can cause mental problems. PRI which is Penal Reform International says “That research shows that twenty-two national prison systems hold more than double of their capacity. That means that twenty-eight countries operating at between 150% and 200% capacity.
Another option to stop overcrowding, is send them to mental health or rehabilitation centers. Overcrowding usually occurs when people are released on probation or community service, and they never complete it so they end up coming back. There is just a huge demand for prison space. Some countries, even use pardons to relieve some of the overcrowding in their countries. The mass increation problem gets affected by the lawmaking process. More prisoners in jail, cause more workers, space, and food. All these things lead up to more money. I think with longer prison sentences, will make people rethink their crime which will help with overcrowdedness. Longer prison sentences could make america great again and change america for the better.
