Critical Analysis Of The Article On Defaulting Student Loans

Have you ever had any problems with your student loans? In the article “why I defaulted on my student loans” by Lee Siegel. Siegel is a New York City writer and cultural critic who has written for the nation and New York Times and many more. Siegel explains how student loans are getting out of hand and that they set you up for failure. I would disagree with Siegel because he made it seem like there was no hope because he was having a tough time with his loans so Siegel decided not to pay any more because things weren't going his way and decided not to stand by his obligations that he agreed too. Siegel's decision to not follow his obligations on his student loans will have consequences in the future.

Siegel's idea about “if every student defaulted on their student loans, then they would have to figure out how to give everyone a guaranteed education”. I believe this idea was preposterous because we would all have the same knowledge and there would be no competition between each other. Our educational system is designed to keep on changing over the years. I believe Siegel decision would have changed if he chose and less expensive college so he wouldn't be in debt and still be able to do what he loves all though it will take a little longer it's better than not following your obligations. Siegel states “After some decade on this Earth the road to character is often paved with family money and family connections”.

Siegel Is wrong because I personally know a couple people who received zero support from their families and work and go to school full-time so they are able to reach their educational goals. I believe Siegel is a person who didn't want to struggle so he looked for excuses and found the easiest way to reach his goal although he reached his goal like he wanted to, but it came with consequences.

Another reason why I disagree with siegel because we now live in a year with some financial support to help students reach their educational goals. Siegel states “I could give up what became my vacation (in this case being a writer )and take a job that I didn't want in order to repay the huge that I had to accumulate in college and graduate school or I could take what I had been led to believe was both morally and legally reprehensible step of defaulting on my student loans which was the only way I could survive without wasting my life in a job that has nothing to do with my particular usefulness to society I chose life this is too say I defaulted on my student loans”.

Siegel was morally right about wanting to pursue and his dream career but he should have known what he was getting himself into when he signed his student loan contract, just because Siegel felt like he was being done wrong doesn't give him the right to just stopped paying his loans. Siegel Had obligations that he felt like he didn't need to fulfill and let a lot of people down.

Overall Siegel article would work only if our educational system didn't change, but it will continue to change over the years. Although I didn't agree with Siegel article but it did point out some issues like the lack of support and programs are low income families receive. Defaulting a student loan can be very risky especially if you are changing colleges. Siegel's decision to not follow his obligations on his student loans will have consequences waiting for him in the future. At the end of the day I wouldn't recommend defaulting on your student loans.
