Critical Analysis Of The Article “The Jawi Manuscript: Its History, Role, And Function In The Malay Archipelago”
Objectives
The objectives of the article are:
- To elucidate the history of Jawi manuscript against Malay civilization
- To discuss the function and the role of the Jawi manuscript in The Malay Archipelago
- To discuss the influence Islamic and Arabic against Jawi manuscript writing instruments.
Methodology
Based on this articles do not mention about quantitative or qualitative research. However, the assumed is qualitative research are used to writing this article, because according to reviewing, the understanding about opinion, reasons and motivations about the Jawi manuscript. The weaknesses of the methodology are not clearly about the research method to producing the articles while it could to make assuming about the method used. The design of the study does not provide any hypothesis.
Scope
The scope can be extract of the title “The Jawi Manuscript: Its History, Role, and Function in the Malay Archipelago”. Based on the title, it can be related to the Malay Archipelago as the main scope about the Jawi manuscripts which researcher interesting to review about understanding, thinking and how the lives of the Malay race, thinking through the discovery of old manuscripts by the western scholars. Printing and publication of Jawi manuscript begins at the end of the 19th century organized by the Government of Turkey with the help of Uthmaniah by Malay scholars in Mecca.
Writing Style
The technical aspect of writing style employed by the author is defined by the usage of American Psychological Association’s (APA) style of citation for footnotes and references. The author, Dr. Mahayudin Hj Yahaya, also presented heading in the articles. Every subtitle are followed by explanation about the name of the writer, the translator, the transcriber, the title, the date it was written, translated transcribed, content, illustration, and decoration of the manuscript. The author’s approach in writing this article is to provide a wholly theoretical informative perspective on Jawi manuscripts. The evolution background of Jawi manuscripts was illustrated and the benefits and structure are presented. The author also took the initiative to explain the chronology process of Jawi manuscripts from beginning until the cataloguing and publication. The author tried to organize a relatively cohesive sequence of his thoughts to be presented to the reader, such as relating Islamic and Arabic against Jawi manuscript towards Islamic religion teaches its followers to be humble and do not individualistic. In my opinion, the author is very concerned about the religious spirit that is important in unifying the structure of civilization in the Malay archipelago.
Timeliness
One of the major reason that I chose this article is because it is closely related to the "jawi" origin used in the Malay world in the Malay archipelago. Hence, I interested with the effort of author highlighted about the Jawi manuscripts giving big impact against the researcher and scholars that want to study the Jawi manuscript related to the Islamic society and bring the manuscript to their places. From my observation, this article is are related with my academic subject that are current learn of my environment.
Accuracy
This article is wholly fact and I presume that the author is trying to giving knowledge Jawi manuscript to become explicit knowledge. However, the topic was well focused on Jawi manuscript based on the author research and references from related topics from other authors in the same field of interest.
Authoritativeness
The author, Dr. Mahayudin Hj Yahaya is teaching staff at Faculty of Arabic Language and Islamic Civilization. Academic record of the author such as Bachelor of Arts in Arabic and Islamic Studies (1968) from Cairo University, Dip. Ed. (1969) from Ain Shams University, Cairo and Ph. D. (1978) from University of Exeter, England, United Kingdom. This article is a debut appearance by the author in the Journal of Islamic Studies and Culture.
There are eight references used by the author when presenting the article. Since this issue is at the awakening stage, the author did not refer to one particular source but rather from different sources to capture different angles of perspectives on the issue. Target Audience The target audience of this article is magnanimous in size. This fact article is of course useful for the people involved in academics like scholars, researchers. The audience could also be directed towards in the historical knowledge. The knowledge and exposure gathered from this article could be an awakening process for Jawi manuscript.
Others
The article was written in a simple language resulting in the high level understandability. With that approach, the author can well reach the masses to read his article. There was many model introduced and only a manifestation and extension of a fact presented in this article. Even though I do not think that this is a very good article, I would consider that it is a good effort by author. The topic was well chosen given the fact that the issue on Jawi manuscript is a very good and interesting.
Conclusions
The data adequately are support the conclusion drawn by the researcher. Researcher also making the conclusion based on the real fact of the reviewing. The work is very contribute to field because the manuscript are related to academic subject.
