Critical Analysis Of The Movie 300
300 is the 2006 film which is a retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae within the Persian Wars (492-449 BC). This movie is based on the comic series that was published in 1998 by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley. Furthermore, it was popular and earning over $450 million, as well as, was the 24th largest in box office history at that time during the film’s opening.
King Leonidas is the main character in the movie, and Gerard Butler acted it. Leonidas is a true warrior of Sparta due to his willingness and capabilities which tried hard to fight for national freedom. Lena Headey acted as Queen Gorgo who was a wife of King Leonidas. She is a leading woman in the tribe which could deal with political and governmental issues. Xerxes, who was a king of Persia, acted by Rodrigo Santoro, he wanted to control the world with his ambition, but he was not a great leader due to his careless, weakness, and incapables.
After Leonidas was born, his life turned to kingship, which made his childhood as worse as other kids in the tribe. He forced to live hardly in order to be trained and be the most excellent warrior in order to become an unbeatable king. Story continues, and a Persian envoy arrives demanding “earth and water” as a token of submission to King Xerxes, but the Spartans denied and threw them into a deep hole. Then, Leonidas visits Ephors to tell a strategy to deal with Persians, but Ephors refused and said that there would not have war at the time of Carneia. However, Leonidas still decided to go to war due to he does not want his citizens being slaves or worse. The Ephors were being corrupted by Persians, which they will receive gold and fresh oracles daily. The next day, the King gathers his powerful soldiers and his bodyguards around three hundred to join the fight, then they head to North (The Hot Gate). The battle begins, and Persians lead a million army to attack the three hundred Spartan. Wave after wave, Spartan won, and Xerxes personally seek Leonidas to see him in order to persuade him to surrender by offering wealth and power in exchange, but Leonidas denied directly. Xerxes is so furious and sending his elites soldiers and immortals to kill the enemy; unfortunately, Spartans manage to defeat them with a few loss and slightly help from Arcadians. The second day, the Persian gathers armies from Asia and uses the war elephants to join forces, but there was no victory for them. After the reject from Leonidas, Ephialtes betrays and defects to Xerxes, and he will receive women, wealth, luxury, and uniform in exchange for the strategy of Spartan. After knowing this news, Arcadians starts to feel worried and leave, but Spartans remain even though they are injured. Queen Gorgo knows that the three hundred armies will not last long, so she tried to persuade the council to send the reinforcements to aid them. On the next day, Ephialtes led the Persia’s soldiers and went over the secret path of the Spartan’s plan. Leonidas tricks them that he will surrender by kneeling to Xerxes, allowing his general to kill the enemies. Xerxes is so angry and ordered to attack, then Leonidas rises and throws his spear directly to Xerxes, but it was a missed shot. Spartans fight till the last man and die by arrows. The war ended, and Spartan lost, but one man can go back to Sparta and tell the news to everyone. They are miserable, but they always remember the great battle and King Leonidas who fought hard for his nation because of freedom.
This movie is filled with fantastic performers who led the film to become attractive and excited. First, Gerard Butler knew pretty well to this character, and as a king, he played this role perfectly. Spartans mostly believe in God, and their culture was centred on loyalty to the state and military service. Moreover, they worn clothes that cover their particular part of the body, which was completely different from real history due to they were all naked. This movie generated based on the historical event, so it is complicated for those who are not interested in history. This film was great, and it is not boring from scene to scene due to the way that director captured each of it. The best things about this show is that Leonidas, who is the King of Sparta, really cares about his people and their freedom. He predicts that if he does not go to war, his people will become slaves or even worse. Even though there were three hundred armies, he is still brave because of his nation. Likewise, the history of Cambodia is quite similar to this film. King Norodom Sihanouk tried hard to gain independence for his nation even though there were numerous obstacles. Overall, this is a great historical movie because it gives a positive spirit to people and the country. The state is our main base, and we shall do everything to help and develop it. Besides, this film showed how to become a good leader and what a leader should do toward their nation and people. Decision-making is very difficult for everybody, but if there is a slight chance in exchange of benefits for the country, the leader shall decide and fight against any challenges.
