Critical Analysis Of The Movie The Godfather
“Love passes, friendship breaks up and only blood ties are indestructible forever”- these words are fully expressing the idea of the novel “The Godfather” written by Mario Puzo. His novel caused a great resonance in the late 1960s. Our generation know this novel by eponymous movie, filmed by Francis Ford Coppola. I’d like to write critique only about the film, because it was the first movie that I’ve ever watched.
This is legendary “classic” movie which was filmed with thoughtful plot, excellent performance of actors and outright show of mafia’s life. Francis Ford Coppola made the accent to the side of family’s value, we can see it by the beginning of film which begins with the wedding of the Vito Corleone’s daughter. In the film boldly alternate episodes of bloody slaughter and intimate family scenes of weddings, baptisms and marital strife. The film covers the period from 1945 to 1955, when the war ended. The whole New York is divided into spheres of influence of five families, the main is headed by the family of Vito Corleone, which controls more than half of New York. Youngest son of Vito Corleone Michael returns after war and even doesn’t thinking to continue his father’s job, but death of his brother and assassination attempt made on his father forcing him to become head of family.
Even if he was calm boy, he understands that family’s honor is most important thing in his life and decides to take revenge by the murder of the leaders of the other families. This action and partially drama movie filmed in the beginning of 1970s, at that time the films mostly didn’t have not only the special effects, but even the color shooting. Coppola’s movie is a masterpiece for its period with a lot of scenes of firefights, but this isn’t main advantages of the movie. The actor’s play and composition of sound was at very high level, after all film won Oscar in many nominations like best movie, best soundtrack and best male role. Marlon Brando and Al Pacino played so great, that their dialogues were so serious that even sometimes you begin to feel fear, that’s why you can sense the atmosphere and spirit of mafia’s life. From the beginning till the end, the movie is accompanied by murders and skirmishes. Some may argue that actions and chaos that creators showed, aren’t at all ethical and the youth who watched this movie become violent in order to imitate to criminal life.
Although this isn’t true, firstly because creators have set age limit for watching, moreover, this film was about mafia and they had to show how real mafia is lived and I consider that the movie also has nurture effect, because in the film Michael Corleone lost the closest people to become the head of mafia. Taking everything into consideration, “The Godfather” is the best movie that I ever watched because it was filmed with thrilling scenario, chic casting and perfect demonstration of concept of loyalty to the family. I would like to recommend to watch this movie and believe me it will be the best 177 minutes which you ever have spent.
