Development And History Of Tablets Affecting Daily Lives

To gain knowledge on how tablet continuously impacts our lives today, we must fully understand the insight of how far tablet has developed. This would enable us to understand how the development of tablets has impacted people's life today compared to when it didn’t exist or even when it hadn’t been upgraded with high technology system as today. The first tablet was created in the 1914[1], however in 1972 Alan Kay invented the Dynabook tablet dedicated to children of all ages. [2] This tablet was seen to be the first tablet that had major impact on people lives, totally changing their life. Though this may have affected children's life, later in 1992 he thought of an idea of building a device with Tandy and Casio, which he named as the “Tandy Zoomer”. [6] This was taken a step further, in 2018 iPad Pro was invented which was dedicated towards students and school. [7] This included Apple A12X processor, to increase the performance whilst using less power.

First main argumentThe Dynabook tablet[2] was aimed for children, to gain the new concept of digital media. Alan Kay’s concept of his creation was for “a personal computer for children of all ages”, to give children more active rather than passive life, by giving access to active books, music, tool and more via the tablet. It can be strongly argued that tablet plays a major roles in children’s life as even children who don’t have communication skills tend to gain good strength through playing appropriate games on tablets. Which doesn’t only grow their hope but also teaches and engages them to step forward and express themselves further. Though tablets back then were simple with less features, it is believed that today Amazon HD Fire 8 invented in 2015 is seen to be the best societal tablet especially for children. It contains high protection where you could set password to restrict the child’s access. They would need parental consent to do anything that we believe may put them in risk such as downloading app, accessing pages they shouldn’t etc.

However, many see tablet as impacting children in a negative way, making them lazy and inactive or even exposing them to inappropriate contents and exposing their privacy without being aware. A subheadingTablet has been progressed to a level at which, the risk level of privacy has risen. Many have got in to the thought that tablet is theirs, therefore everything is safe and stays within it. However, they haven’t realised that making tablet part of their life to store their personal information such as bank and login details are given away to hackers and strangers to access it all. Some parents tend to even save the login details on their tablet, leading to children being able to login to anything themselves that they shouldn’t. This doesn’t just give children access to sites and apps they shouldn’t see but also gives away the details to strangers to hack into their tablet and get private information.

In 2013, children’s tablet was more at risk compared to others, as they either have little or no security at all therefore there private details are vulnerable to be hacked[3]. Manufacturer receives the passwords over a connection after which they can break the code and access their tablet without permission to satisfy their purpose for hacking. Two years later after knowing children tablets are not secured in any way, they realised that Vtech electronic tablet[4] and toys went through hack attack. This attack included more than 6. 3 million accounts being hacked giving the hackers access to their photos and chat logs. The main risk of privacy is caused due to parents not reading the terms and conditions and just accepting them. As we agree to the T&C, we also give hackers permission to access our device without the knowledge. This shows the ethical and societal issue that the development of tablet has created, putting peoples to face many problems. Another subheadingMany wouldn’t be aware of how often tablets face legal issues as most are kept within the companies to avoid bad representation for their company to face loss. The truth is that there are many legal issues taking place as tablet develops and the most common issue that is spoken out is the copyright issue. The one issue that was around the news in 2011 in the telegraph was that “Apple sues Samsung for ‘slavish’ copying of iPhone and iPad”[5].

In which American law reported that Samsung are copying design of iPad to create theirs. Afterwhich the Apple also noticed that the way the icons were set out and the way in which it was presented were seen to be alike. Having realised these similarity between Samsung and iPad’s such as rectangle design along with rounded corners, same black borders etc, they are predicting that there are high chances that other manufactures such HTC, Nokia will also have copyright issues along with Apple company. Apple believe that it wasn’t a coincident for the feature and look of Samsung device to be similar to Apple, instead it’s clear that it was obviously copied which is wrong. Apple have admitted that they have put across 16 objections against Samsung, which counts unjust enrichment, trademark infringement and 10 patent claims.

Second Main Argument

These issues may seem shocking at the time we hear, however it may not be impacting our daily lives, however the increase in development of tablet is becoming a sign that it be over taking us. You can see in stores tablet being used to occupy children, or to give customers the opportunity to search for what they need. Stores such as Argos and Ikea have tablets in place, in order for customers to search where the items they need are located or where they are available. This overtakes the job of staff to help customers find items, this means the amount of stuff required in the store reduces. If machines and tablets overtake peoples work, in few years time many will face unemployment due to losing their job. The iPad Pro that was invented in 2018 was aimed for students and school, they sold it at different cost for different buyers. This means it executes inequality, which isn’t fair to others, such that it was US$329 for consumers, $309 for students and $299 for schools. If unemployment increases many will start to face poverty, which means they will not give priority to buy tablets. Poverty wouldn’t only mean not being able to buy what they want, but also may stop children from attending school. If they are still able to attend school, they would be materially deprived leading them to be lacking in knowledge that others would have obtained from using tablets for their research. This shows that the development of tablets has a negative impact on our lives, by increasing inequality and unemployment.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the growth of tablet effectively increases the risk that people have to face in their lifetime. Though we may see some advantages to have access to tablet, using tablet increases the impact we may need to face such as security and privacy issues.
