Evaluation Of Corporate Social Responsibility Of Mcdonald’S Company
The signature golden arch of Mcdonald’s represents the world-renowned, world’s largest fast-food chain. However, McDonald’s is much more than just burgers and french fries, it is also known for its charity programs the most famous one being the Ronald McDonald house which provides housing for parents who come a long way to send their children to the hospital to receive medical treatment. The houses are conveniently equipped with kitchens, laundry machines, and a playground for kids. Families pay the small fee of $11. 50 per night and in the circumstances where they cannot afford that, they are also welcome to stay for no cost. Currently, 10, 000 families enjoy the warm and comfortable living environment while their children receive medical care at a nearby hospital (RMHC).
A similar program is the Mcdonald family rooms which enable families to rest and relax inside the hospital. Currently, there are 16 of those family room located across Canada. A positive future projection shows that McDonald plans to install 37 family rooms in hospitals all over Canada by 2021(RMHC). Not only does McDonald’s provide housing for families that travel to the hospital, but it also brings treatment to unprivileged communities with the accessible Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles. McDonald’s also demonstrates corporate social responsibility within the company by operating an all-inclusive environment as one of their principles state diversity is crucial to a business’s success. At McDonald’s, every employee’s culture, experience, and identity are valued and respected.
Furthermore, McDonald’s extends its global diversity and inclusivity by working with numerous community-based organizations such as Asian and Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund, American Indian College Fund, Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement, Junior Achievement USA, etc. Another major aspect of McDonald’s corporate social responsibility is the sustainability of the environment. As an effort to promote ethical environmental practices, McDonald’s reduces and minimizes packing waste. The initiative eliminated more than 300 million pounds of packaging, recycled 1 million tons of corrugated boxes and reduced waste by 30% in the decade following the partnership. In 2014, McDonald’s partnered up with WWF’s global forest and trade network program to focus on wood fiber sources for their packaging material. As of 2017, 50% of McDonald’s guest packaging is made up of renewable, recycled and certified sources in order to reduce costs and minimize environmental impact.
By the year 2025, McDonald’s aims to solely use renewable, recyclable material for packaging. As a matter of fact, in 2018, McDonald’s collaborated with Starbucks to create a recyclable and/ or compostable cup as a replacement for single-use plastic cups which are damaging to the environment because they are considered “white pollution”. McDonald has already subsidized $5 million to the NextGen Cup challenge.
In conclusion, with considerations of McDonald’s initiative shown through its Ronald McDonald House Charity, inclusion and diversity beliefs, and environmental sustainability awareness, McDonald demonstrates excellent corporate social responsibility.
