Feminist Analysis Of The Scene From The Film Inception

For this case analysis, I have decided to select the feminist analysis. In many different types of media, feminist analysis can be seen everywhere. In Hollywood, the roles that women have are very sexualized and are mostly concerned about the beauty of the female character are shown to be emotional and unwise. In addition, as stated in the textbook “Feminist media scholars, in particular, concentrate on revealing the limiting nature of mass media texts that reinforce dominant social understandings of sex and gender”. As a result, for this assignment, the movie that I have decided to analysis is called, Inception. The reason why I selected Inception is that the majority of the main characters are males and there is only one important female character named Ariadne. Also, it was interesting to analyze how in many scenes Ariadne had very less input and was only there for emotional support. The one scene that I will be going in depth is called the Dream Fortress scene. In this scene, we can see that they are in a battle and everyone is male except Ariadne.

The scene shows Cobb and Ariadne trying to survive however, the majority of the scene is focused on Ariadne following Cobb for survival. Moreover, Ariadne is asking many questions about their plan such as “How long do we have?”, which supports the idea of women portrayed to be unwise. The main conflict in this scene is that everyone has some sort of weapon except Ariadne, she is only seen following the character Cobb. In addition, every male character including the extras is doing all the dangerous task while Ariadne is doing the minimum.

This scene is emphasizing that females are not capable to handle any weapons and need a male figure to protect them. Moreover, the scene also demonstrates that females are not capable of being outside to help kill the enemy. Ariadne is inside a building with Cobb watching him kill the enemies. In my opinion, there is no one specifically a thwart in this scene because they do accomplish their goal in the scene. However, it is obvious that the enemies are preventing them from accomplishing their mission but I do think that Ariadne was slowing down Cobb. The scene shows how Cobb is making sure that Ariadne is safe and is following him to the building. Lastly, the role that the setting plays is very interesting and has meaning to it. As mentioned above, Cobb takes Ariadne inside a building for her safety and then resumes to kill the enemies. This displays that females are not capable to handle the outside cold weather.

In conclusion, this scene shows that feminist analysis can be applied to this scene and makes this scene more interesting to watch.
