Frederick Law Olmsted And Landscape Design
Landscape design had importance in urban environments particularly after the Industrial Revolution because of how it had helped people to see how there was more to a landscape design then how much thought was put in to them. Landscape design which is also known as landscape architecture was founded by Frederick law Olmsted he was a huge lover of scenery which helped him developed landscape architecture. He started off with the belief of how the landscape Architecture is used to satisfy the human needs which is showed in his work as they have lasted throughout the years in many different place like New York City and Buffalo and this means that he wanted his art to have an effect on people he wanted to be able to pull out some of the emotion people have felt from the scene much like how he had felt feel when he developed a love for scenery as a young child. Olmsted was able to speak to people through his diegin when he worked on central park with Calvert Vaux and used central park “to counteract the artificiality of the city and the stress of urban life” which help to bring more peace to people and have them feel at calm when they are in central park and taking a break from the urban city life.
Olmsted help to show how landscape design was very important to help people realize that your environment in a way can help impact what you feel since after the industrial revolution there was a lot more people working in machinery and spending long hours in the factories which would harm their bodies and mental state of mind since they were being contained to see one things so landscape design helped to open them up to seeing more of nature in the areas that lacked it. That is similar to how Olmsted adding more parks to New York City to give the redesigned a break from the city life and experience the scenery and the emotions he felt as a child when he saw nature as opposed to the city life that he was use to. Also after the industrial revolution the conditions in cities started to get worse since there was more pollution building up and the living conditions were not up to par which was shown in how they were packing people together. Landscape design helped to give urban environments a touch of breath air which they need to be able to balance out the stress of the work that they are doing and the lack of nature in the environment that they are.
Olmsted who was the founder Landscape Design more commonly known as Landscape Architecture showed through his work that he wanted people to be able to feel some emotion through the work that he has done and to be able to embrace it like how he has grown to embrace it from since he was a child to the day that he died. It also helped to show how certain things can help to change the future for the better like how Olmsted wanted to add more nature scerency to urban areas and now those areas have very well known parks like in New YOrk CIty they have morningside park, prospect park etc, and which shows how the times have changed from back there to now.
