Free Colleges Would Resolve the Problem of Students Debt

“From the past years, student loan debt rose by 39%, reaching as much as $1.3 trillion”. If college was free, student loans/debt would be eliminated; the money used on tuition could easily be carried over to cover other costs such as a house, car, and medical bills. By making college free, it will allow students to focus on their education without worrying about the expensive costs. There are many students who are driven to complete their education. Although driven to finish, the are financially challenged. With these expensive costs, it holds back ambitious students because of the worry of paying off the tuition– even when student loans are available.

Pell Grant is money given to students provided by the government; this money is used for students to pay off their tuition. “The Pell grant currently covers about 30% of tuition for students”. When there is less debt involved, students can focus more on their school assignments rather than worrying about their school work and the expenses. By making college cost free, it can lead students to solely focus on their education which can ultimately lead to higher grades and better job opportunities. This in turn, can make society a better place. Free education encourages the child's active attitude to life, culture, cognitive activity.

Education is the key to success, especially in this generation. Without education, it will be hard for a student to keep up with society and be successful. Student loans and high tuitions will disable students to want to engage with their knowledge on an academic level. Going to school, and only having the worry of focusing on school, will provide children and adults with personal growth. Since it will be free, it is based on the person's interest. Since it is free, they have the choice of attending or not attending, which can create a less competitive environment, giving more people the chance to learn and be provided with education.Free education teaches the child to feel the line between freedom and self-will. This will ensure the student to want to go to school and give them the ambition to want to learn. For example, the organization of children's community will provide a child to not feel obligated to learn and do it through their free will.

Although most public schools/colleges may not pay fees, they still require other costs such as textbooks, pens, clothes, etc. These costs still affect their expenses greatly as most families income goes directly to school. Recent estimates indicate that the poorest households spend approximately 6% of their total financial resources per child in primary school, on average, compared with 2.5% spent by the upper quintile. “Households spend 13 and 7.5%, respectively, of their total expenditure on education overall”. Although tuition may be free, other costs will go to education which is not exactly “free”– as promised. Most households that are financially struggling will still use most of their money on school when they can be using their money on other necessities. With free education, yes, it will give more people the advantage of receiving an education, however, it will still stop people from going to school because of the other expenses school requires.

By allowing free education, it could encourage financial responsibility. A valuable lesson most college is how to manage your finances. In most cases, some students are forced to manage their finances due to student loans. Paying off student loans, can make any person more responsible because of the monthly payments. This can make it easier to establish a good credit score. If college was free, financial lessons would disappear.

Additionally, it can devalue the worth of a diploma. A college diploma is valuable. It is valuable because of the amount of work it requires to receive it. If free education was enabled, the diploma would be more accessible and less valuable. Free tuition would also make attending class less valuable. As their education is free, cutting class would become an easier option since there are no expenses or personal investments. It can encourage more reckless behavior in college learning.

If college was free, it would require someone to pay for it. College tuition would be covered by taxpayers. It would propose payments to increase among society. In turn, although it may “be free”, it will enforce society to pay higher taxes.
