A stereotype can be best described as a held oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. Stereotypes enable us to respond to situations because we may have had a similar experience prior. But it is the one thing that makes us ignore the differences between individuals. We make generalizations and are quick to make assumptions of those that may or may not be true. It is the way in which people simplify our social world.
Stereotypes have lead to social categorization which is the leading cause for individuals prejudice attitudes and actions. Gender stereotypes are one of the leading causes for discrimination, abuse and violence. It is a widely accepted judgement or bias about a person or group. Gender stereotypes cause unequal and unfair treatment. Otherwise known as sexism. Examples of this include stereotyping the domestic behaviours of the male and female gender. Some people expect that women will take care of the children, cook and clean. Whilst men are to take care of finances, work of the car and do the home repairs. These exaggerated gender stereotypes can make relationships difficult. Some are harmful and do not allow people to fully express themselves and their emotions. Point it out if the media is full of negative gender stereotypes. Be a living example and be a role model for your friends and family and speak up if someone makes a sexist joke or comment. 87% of women asked (aged 11-21) think that women are judged more for their looks rather than their ability. These types of stereotypes shape individuals self-perception, attitudes and influence people's performance in their employed position. In schools they affect young children's classroom experience, academic performance, subject choice and well-being. These assumptions made are both conscious and unconscious and result in students being treated differently and being offered different opportunities based on their gender.
Unconscious bias happens when our subconscious is quick to make fixed assumptions of people based on their background or perceived background. An individual can be unconsciously influenced by a stereotype even if they do not believe it. Working to counteract these biases are important in ridding the negative effect of gender stereotypes. However these assumptions are made based on people's age, race or gender and cause many to miss out on amazing opportunities.
Gender stereotypes are the root cause of gender-based violence against women. Things such as gender-responsive education and the integration of gender equality into all levels of education can help to eliminate this violence and to promote a non-violent, respectful gender equal relationship between men and women. Twenty-two per cent of young men and twelve percent of young women agree that men should take control in relationships and be the head of the household. Over one in five young men don’t agree that people should always get consent before any sexual activity.
