Geography and Social Studies in Montessori Teacher Education Program
The Montessori Geography and Social studies curriculum are physical and cultural geography. Physical geography discusses the formation of the universe, the creation of the earth, and all its physical properties. Cultural geography is the study of human society and culture. Teacher in a Montessori environment builds exercise to help the child that they are members of the human society and have a senesce to who they are and where they live in and most immortally help them discover on their own who they co-exist peacefully. “What is the limit of the words in the children will learn? I do not know! Does the mind of the child limit itself in taking in objects and the facts about the things they see? No; the child has a type of mind that goes beyond Concrete limits.”
Maria Montessori builds sensorial exercise which helps the child to use his/her own imaginative mind to understand the physical world. For example, a sphere in the geometric solids area is compared to the shape of the globe. Another exercise is a map puzzle which helps the child to understand the maps and what they are meant by taking apart and putting together. Using physical traits children will gain a physical and mental connection and discover to understand the map form of the Earth. The teacher has an important part in a Montessori classroom; First thing is to prepare and follow through to the child can execute all exercise and most important enjoy the discovery of the world. These exercises will help children learn to build landforms using play dough and fill water forms with water. “The teacher requires a special preparation, because it is not our logic that solves problems. In no point on which we have touched, does our logic help, we have to know the Child development and to shed our pre-conceived ideas” are meant to be taken apart and put back together again as children develop an understanding of continents and oceans. Using these Montessori hands-on activities build long term memory by physically engaging the hand. “Geography gives an example. If we have never seen a lake or snow, we have to imagine them, imagination has to be put into activity.”
Exercises base on the physical and cultural geography helps students make their own discovery about the people who live on different continents and learn about different types of food, music, clothing, traditions, holidays, customs, housing, as well as the plants and animals of the region as they compare. Children will learn about learning about the flags of all around the world and respectfully carry them as they “walk the line” in the Montessori prepared environment. They learn to appreciate the wonder found in the similarities and differences found around the world.
