Handling And Storing Of Materials And Chemicals
Procedures such as Handling and storing of materials and chemicals are followed to prevent contamination of chemicals during storage. Training is required here to ensure no damage is done to the lifter and equipment. Manual handling regulations 1992 says before handling of objects employers should asses and employees should train to reduce chances of harm and injury to worker; Health and Safety (Training for Employment) Regulations (1990).
Equipment needs to be regularly calibrated to ensure during experiments they are functional and obtain accurate results. Equipments need to be regularly serviced and maintained to make sure no user is injured whilst working with equipments which may be malfunctioning. Equipments, chemicals need to be collected and handled carefully so new equipments, chemicals can be used and to make sure they are disposed appropriately. Equipments need to be regularly calibrated to provide accurate results when needed for experiments. Proper radioactive substance disposal are followed so there is no damage done to the environment, prevent contamination during disposal within the lab and minimize hazard risk for workers within the lab.
Safe handling and use of glassware is followed so workers are not injured, broken glassware is correctly handled therefore safer lab environment. Handling of solvents and poisons are followed to ensure they are correctly handled in a ventilated area to prevent injury to workers. Ovens and fume cupboards should be maintained and checked to ensure extractors are functioning correctly to prevent injury through inhalation to users during aт experiment which involves toxic gases. Workers need to be careful with hot ovens to prevent burns.
Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulation (1998) is to keep workers safe when machines and equipment are used in a workplace as a result the procedure to maintain and regulate oven fumes and fume cupboards should be followed. Procedures are followed to ensure the lab is a suitable site for carrying out experiments and safe workplace for the staff members as there is reduced possibility of hazardous events occurring and increased lab outcome (high productivity and safety). If the procedure is not followed there is a greater likelihood of employees involved in accidents such as the assistant in the case study which the higher members of the hierarchy may be blamed, for not overseeing whether code of practice is being followed and communicating clearly to employees. This could lead to the company losing money for example on insurances.
Procedures are followed to ensure equipment are maintained, chemicals/ radioactive substance are appropriately stored and disposed of. Correct disposal procedures means there is less damage caused to the environment because old equipments which are usable will be donated to organization instead of being sent to landfills or recycled which requires large amount of energy.
