Higher Education Skills Essay

This week I have been introduced to the content in my first semester: we will be solidifying basic knowledge to ensure all writing we complete is of academic standard. I have learnt skills that are important for my higher education,  This is skills essay where I want to share my new knowledge about skills that I need to have for my future career. 

So during the class we've indentified some important skills for my higher education. For example taking notes, this skill is very important for creating revision resources. Note taking is difficult for me as I write down everything and not just the key information therefore, I set myself a target to take more critical notes.

Academic reading is a skill I feel as though I have improved on this week. We have been over techniques such as scan reading and summarizing. This helped me understand how to manipulate of a piece of writing I am using for research, to ensure I am picking out key topics by skimming the text and summarizing these topics into a different form, so I retain the information.

After completing my studies, I would like to train as a clinical trials nurse. I believe I have skills that are important for this job such as communication skills, needed when recruiting patients for trials. Also working as part of a team is an important skill to have because when working with doctors and patients everything needs to be clear and concise to evade mistakes that could be life threatening.

My verbal communication skills are good, throughout school I have always worked on presentation skills by talking in front of groups of people. Over the few weeks at university I have got to know my peers, thus I am more comfortable and willing to contribute in lectures. I have been engaging with my lecturer and gaining a deeper understanding of the work to try and learn as much as I can about the academic standards at university. Communication is a very important skill when working in the medical field with patients as you must have an outstanding bedside manner when working as a nurse or carer. 

In conclusion to essay about skills for my future education, I have set myself a personal target this week, based on my time management skills that need improving after falling behind and not completing practical reports within the deadline. This is a skill that needs to be outstanding when working as a nurse, because you must administer medication to patients at specific times and could end someone’s life if this is forgotten or missed. Due to this I have created a weekly timetable to help with my organisation. I have allocated specific times to each task I must complete such as practical reports and time to work on my assessments, this will also improve the quality of the work I produce because a timetable means work will be finished for the deadline and not rushed.
