Holodomor – The Genocide In Ukraine

Holodomor was under serious corruption. The area of Ukraine was under attack. But not with guns or weapons. But with unjust rules policies and restrictions. This genocide from 1932 to 1933 had killed millions of people. Soviet Ukraine was under unfair rule and no one was bothering to fix it. The Holodomor genocide was a result of people not wanting to follow unfair policies like Collectivization. Collectivization is the act of not having privately owned land and instead making people work on government controlled land. People disagreed with this so instead of giving crops and livestock to the government they chose to destroy and kill off their livestock which lead to a huge decrease of farm animals.

Since the people were against this Stalin and the rest of the Soviet Union wanted to teach the people this lesson rules lawed out the controlling of private owned land. Many tried to resist this harsh Ukrainian rule but then they were called enemies of the state and were shipped off to isolated places like Siberia but many died during travel due to starvation or other not survivable condition. Holodomor was a word that was made from two Ukrainian words put together. “Holod” means hunger or starvation. “Mor” has the meaning of death or plague. Shortly after the Genocide ended World War 2 began which might have been a factor in the shifting of attention towards different matters.

Was this genocide ethnic or religious cleansing or was Stalin trying to send a different message? Stalin’s main objective of this Genocide was to force people to follow the ideology of the Soviet’s and the structure of society. During this time many popular leaders and intellectuals who were seen as a threat to the Soviet society and structure were arrested. This entire campaign was a means of intimidating the people of Ukraine. Stalin Set off Events to put in motion his forced famine to eliminate those who opposed him. Stalin was the former general secretary of the communist party of the Soviet Union. Led from 1929-1953. This is a long time to go without food or clean water. Many people died from starvation and heat stroke (not getting enough water).

What was the outcome for the people of Ukraine? Many people resorted to cannibalism. Peasant families often had 5 to 6 children and mothers would kill their weakest child to feed the others. Many people were getting arrested because they would eat their neighbors and their own children’s flesh. They also had to scavenge for water. There weren’t enough resources for all of the Ukrainians to survive. Some people did escape and can recall heartbreaking stories of friends and family members they lost

Many tried to resist this harsh Ukrainian rule but then they were called enemies of the state and were shipped off to isolated places like Siberia but many died during travel due to starvation or other not survivable condition. Around 28,000 Ukrainians were dying from starvation each day. The international community acknowledged the famine but Stalin refused help and visitors weren’t allowed in Ukraine. Russia and the Soviet Union still deny genocide. The Soviet Union was quick to deny the famine happened, even though they knew that they were the people at fault.
