How Texas State University Fulfills The Role Of Higher Education

Higher education is a form of learning which usually occurs at a college or university, after completing a secondary education. The role of higher education is not only to prepare the students for their intended field, but for the students to achieve a successful future and job. One popular argument is whether universities fulfill the role of higher education. This concern, predictably enough, is popular within the Texas State University community; however, Texas State goes over and beyond to meet the higher education requirements.

Texas State fulfills the role of higher education by providing students with guidance, experiences, and a helpful community; therefore, students are able to achieve a successful future and job. As human beings we all possess the same goals, to work at our dream jobs and to make money. Many believe that these goals are not attainable without higher education; however, some would say that a high school diploma is just as beneficial as a college degree. Those who believe that college degrees and high school diplomas carry the same benefits are poorly mistaken. Statistically proven, individuals with no more than a high school diploma have fallen way behind college graduates in their economic status. “College graduates, on average, earn 56% more than high school grads…according to data compiled by the Economic Policy Institute” . In life you have the choice of going to work instantly or staying in school to reach a better funding job. Those who decide to go to work immediately will never have the same benefits as the individuals that receive a college degree —They will either make money or work at their dream job, never both. For example, a friend of mine is not attending college, instead he is focusing on his advertising job. He is currently making money, but this is not his dream job and that will be more difficult to achieve the longer he waits. Also, the salary that he is receiving will not be as efficient in the long run. Eventually, he will start a family and realize that his income is not suitable for more than one person. Members of a higher education are greatly encouraged to experience new things such as clubs, sports, and different organizations — Most of these programs support change and equality. Change was not always seen as a good thing; however, in today’s society it is highly promoted. At Texas State University individuals are pushed to voice their opinions of what changes they believe in. There are special groups, at Texas State, that are dedicated to certain opinions or beliefs that look for people with the same outlook as them. An example of one of these special groups is the LGBTQ club — This club is meant to break gender barriers and to push people to continue “forging ahead even when society tries to hold them back”. Institutions of higher education, such as Texas State, have created an environment of acceptance throughout the peers and staff, which helps prepare students to adapt to diversity for their future careers.

Individuals that take part in higher education are provided a form of beneficial guidance which allows students to work towards their future ambitions and careers. The form of guidance that students receive at Texas State University is above average considering the graduation rate. According to the Points of Pride page on the Texas State website, “Texas State has the sixth-highest graduation rate of public universities in the state”. The community at Texas State is a huge factor that influences students to advance throughout their collegiate career, towards their future goals. The guidance and energy given off of the professors, at Texas State, spark a deeper understanding and interest for the students, along with encouraging the students to continue their training. Another element that pushes students to succeed is the motivation received from other school organizations and students. For example, Texas State’s Honors College “offers small, stimulating classes taught by master teacher-scholars who employ innovative teaching methods”. This program benefits students in many ways and also encourages them to work harder due to the smaller setting with intense learning. Every university has the same goal, to help their students achieve their future jobs. Without the guidance and support from professors, other individuals, and school organizations at Texas State, these goals would not be as attainable.

Higher education is a form of learning which usually occurs at a college or university, after completing a secondary education. Texas State University fulfills the role of higher education by providing students with guidance, experiences, and a helpful community; therefore, students are able to achieve a successful future and job. Without the freedom in higher education, the world would not have such an advanced working class, be so open to changes, or affect our society in the positive ways that it does —Texas State goes over and beyond to meet the higher education requirements.
