Mankind has been emerging and developing for around seven million years and within that time we have formed a ground-breaking and complex society. We have built machines that can reconstruct hearts and fabricate an embryo out of nothing. With this power, although, comes great responsibility and repercussions. Man has created technology that kills, an unfair justice system, and we are extremely carnivorous, making us truly the most dangerous animal in our kingdom. Our species has weapons that will stop a beating heart faster than it can beat on its own. Although many don’t think we use these armaments in inhumane ways, in 2004, a rate of 76 out of 100, 000 people were murdered in the world by other humans. Since 1966 just in the United States, 1, 107 people have been killed in mass shooting incidents alone. While ammunition could be seen as important in controlling rabid species populations, such as hogs, the misinterpretation of their use is costing us many innocent lives. And we, as humans, have brought this upon ourselves. With technology as a trigger waiting to kill, we have transformed into our biggest fear.
The first American justice system was developed in the 1800’s, and 200 years later, it continues with unfair, outdated views. As Pi states in Life of Pi, “if you stumble about believability, what are you living for?” Some of our judges, lawyers, and employees of law, find it hard to understand this question. They interpret believability with biased and judgmental ways, putting many lives in misery. The first recorded death penalty for a person in the United States of America was in 1608, and we still continue this practice in 2018. As of September 19, 2018, there were 2, 707 inmates on death row in the U. S (DPIC). While Pi points out the consequences of not believing when it comes to perseverance and determination, humans are not believing and are using their prejudices against others. It is costing us too many lives. While the protection of others is extremely important, there are civil ways to accomplish this.
Many humans diets show a carnivorous pattern. A recent study reports that roughly 3. 2 percent of U. S. adults are vegetarians. The study also shows that approximately 0. 5 percent of those are vegans. This is an extremely low number considering the U. S population. The other 96. 8 percent of the population eat meat that is either grown on small family farms, medium-sized farms, or most likely, large commercial farms (Food Revolution). These are the most common providers of our meat and they mass-produce animals to be slaughtered into a cheeseburger. Humans have the most complex brain system with developed feelings, yet when we bite down on a cow that never had the chance to live, we don’t even think about it. A tiger kills its prey only when it is necessary, chooses the hurt or weakest animal, and always finishes the entire meal. Humans, on the other hand, don’t think about any of these factors and waste around 26. 2 percent of the meat sold in our retail stores (NRDC). Although many nutrients such as protein and calcium are vital to our survival, we have turned the processing of animals and food into inhumane jokes. The Patel zoo in Life of Pi includes a curtain with a sign above saying “Most Dangerous Animal”. When you pull the curtain back, you expect to see a Bengal tiger or some other vicious animal. However, you see a mirror and a reflection of yourself.
Mankind chooses to use its complex society in many beneficial ways that keep growing and curating into bigger, better ideas, but it also can be detrimental. The technology created that can kill everything, the unjust system of laws, and the lack of thought about our carnivorous lifestyles all reflect upon the true idea that man is indeed the most dangerous animal in the kingdom.
