Igor Stravinsky Is A Controversial Composer
Igor Stravinsky, born in 1882, is one of the most popular composers of the twentieth century. Born in Russia, he was a great success as a director, composer and pianist. In his styles, he was incompetent and competent, from writing ballets, symphonies, operas, choirs to writing orchestras. Of all the ballets written by Stravinsky, 'The Rite of Spring' seems to be the most controversial.
The ballet 'The Rite of Spring' was not well received during the first among the masses. In fact, during his performance, there was no turmoil in music, but in the Royal Ballet, but also in dissonant harmonies and irregular musical rhythms (Chua, 2007). It was a pagan ritual and, as a result, the bad reaction of humans. His music, however, was received with great enthusiasm in its inauguration in 1914 until today and is one of the best orchestral works of the twentieth century (Burkholder, 2006).
Unusual rhythms are part of the composition elements used by Stravinsky during the Rite of Spring. In rhythms, there was no characteristic metric, while accents were unpredictable. The irregularity of the rhythms gave the sensation that this piece is fundamental. In writing this piece, which took into account the ritual setting, the auditory experience in its harmonies and rhythms can hear the primitive feel (Green, 2016). The harmonies used come from an extravagant planet and each note of this orchestra, however, has an important function.
The harmonies of this piece are rich in dissonances without any dissolution (Fort, 2005). The absence of a natural impulse, the use of dissonance, and irregular rhythm increase the images. In the beginning, music introduces the problem to the listener. They live during the winter; However, they want spring. The call gives the impression that the god of spring evokes the girl's sacrifice. The audience may feel the tension of the girl when it comes to the victim, while in almost three minutes of the room, the instruments were equipped with the smaller scale of normal ground (Green, 2016). However, the rope is released from the heavy bow and hence the call of the horn can be heard. Whatever the texture differences, the notes remain the same and maintain the continuity of the piece.
The complexity of the play is reinforced by new musical ideas that continue to explode throughout the play. Until heavy chords come in, the layers continue to meet, then stop abruptly and a sudden melody is heard. 'The musical elements are found repeatedly in the instruments or even exchange elements between the instruments' (Forte, 2005). For example, what the audience feels at the horns at the beginning of the piece will be heard in the other voice. Likewise, the rhythm of the clarinet is heard later and is played again with the horns. Stravinsky is famous for dispersing his musical elements through his plays.
After about fourteen minutes, once the music is muted, you can experience the imagination of people dancing by the fire. In his work 'The Rite of Spring,' Stravinsky used the graphics card. In this way, the audience can see exactly what is being done for the girl and observe the ritual as a whole, which is the ritual of spring.
