Like Mike Movie – An Inspiration To Become A Champion
Growing up, what did you want to be? Was it a doctor, a firefighter, or the president of the United States? Growing up I wanted to be a professional basketball player. The dream of me being a basketball player came from a movie called “Like Mike”. Like Mike is about a fourteen-year-old orphan named Calvin Cambridge who gets the chance of living out his dream as a professional basketball player. With the help of some special sneakers that were once worn by Michael Jordan, Calvin catches the league by surprise by joining the LA Knights and helping them make the playoffs.
This film had a huge impact on me as a kid. The creativity and imagination in the movie made it easy to image yourself as Calvin in the film and a great movie that everybody should watch. The movie is presented in the eyes of Calvin as we see his life transpire. We are first introduced to Calvin playing basketball outside his group home with his best friends Murph and Reg. The orphanage is located near the NBA team, the Los Angles Knights. The director, Stan Bittleman made the trio sell chocolate candy after each home game. Calvin seems to be the leader of the group because of his basketball skill and knowledge of the game. While selling candy, Calvin meets the team coach and starts a conversation about basketball. The coach is impressed by Calvin’s knowledge of the game and why he was selling candy and offer him tickets to the next game. On the way back to the orphanage, Calvin found his way into a thrift store donation box.
To his surprise inside the box was a pair of Nike Blazer sneakers worn by Michel Jordan. Calvin believe the sneakers gave him magically power. The bully name Ox sees Calvin with the sneakers and take the sneakers and throws them over a power line. Calvin tries to get them from the power line but it was raining and he was shock by a lightning bolt. Calvin could not sleep that night, he was thinking about attending the Knights next home game. When Calvin, Murph and Reg entered the arena their eyes were amazed at the bright lights, music and all the action between the Knights and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Calvin was excited and could not wait for the half time show to begin. He check his pocket to make sure his ticket was still there. Tracy the star of the team hosted the half time show. Calvin listen for his number to be call, and to his surprise it was. Calvin ran through the cheering crowd to the bright floor to enter the dunk contest. The sound of the music was bouncing through the air. The sound track of the song “Playing Basketball” made Calvin feel like he was a NBA player. Calvin took off running toward the basket like a bird, flying through the air and dunk the ball in the basket. The crowd went wild into cheers. The Knights were so impressed with Calvin skills they offered him an on day contract. Calvin was excited but he felt in order to play well he needed those magical sneakers that the bully Oz throw over the power line. Minutes before Calvin was set to play, Ox found a soft spot in his heart and return the sneakers to Calvin. Calvin laced the sneakers up and ran to the arena.
The Knights were trailing and the coach decided to put Calvin in the game. It was Showtime for Calvin, he was shooting and dunking up and down the court. The Knights won and Calvin was the star of the team. After the game Calvin was glazing down at his sneakers and believing they gave him the power to play well. “Like Mike” inspires a person to believe in yourself and everyone has abilities, whether it is your imaginary super power to push through adversity to become a champion.
