Man and Woman Should Have Equal Rights: Feminist Viewpoint

I want to be treated as an equal. That is why I chose the topic “Man and woman should have equal rights” for this essay. Women want to play sports and be active just as males can be. They can work as hard educationally and succeed in the same occupations that men can. Personally, I do not want to be censored around. I don’t even want to be treated as the “lady” in the room, were the male gender can not be themselves. That means, I don’t want men to change the way the act just because I am female. If you can not be yourself, then why be?

For as long as I can remember, I have always been a feminist. Some can be very confused with what a feminist is, or better yet who can be a feminist. Frist, what is a feminist? Well, a feminist is an activist for women’s rights that is biased on equality for all genders. Again, what does that mean? It basically is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. The options should be endless, but they need to include political, economic, reproductive and social opportunities and rights that include both men and women. Being a feminist has gained a horribly bad stigma, however I believe that for the world to become a better place to live, everyone of all genders should be or should become an active feminist.

Feminist, often a word used as an insult, a tag with a negative idea that makes it seem like women think men are evil, sexist, and over dramatic. There is a stereotype on those who classify as feminists. There is an image of braless, unshaven, tom-boy women, who are unreasonably in contradiction with the male gender. However, this is an idea that needs to be erased from people’s minds. I am proud of my gender; I am proud that we have overcome difficulties such as gaining our natural born rights like voting, that men had obviously obtained before us. I am proud that the model of “women in the kitchen” has changed to some range, and women are making developments socially, slowly getting rid of the gender stereotypes.

Pink and Purple shouldn’t be just 'girl colors' and blue and green 'boy colors'. Crying shouldn’t make a boy or a man a wimp or rid him of any sort of masculinity. Being muscular as a female shouldn't be “manly.” House cleaning and laundry doesn’t have to fall on the wife and yardwork the husband. As much of a joke as it often becomes, no, I’m not just going to “find a rich husband” because why should they be the ones to finance a family? The Merriam Webster definition of Feminism is, “the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities.” In no place is man hating, suggested.

In conclusion, there is still a long way to go for gender equality, because it is nearly impossible to erase suggestions that have been engrained in generations from the beginning of time and continue through media and countless other institutions.
