Methods Of Electricity Conservation In Mauritius

Introduction

Electricity is vital to the health, safety, productivity and quality of life of the modern Alaska family. It’s an amazingly versatile energy source that can be used for heat, light, powering appliances and even playing video games. For many of us, it’s easy to take electricity for granted in our modern life. Consequently, many families may be using more electricity than necessary. A home electricity audit is a systematic survey of the home that can be performed by anyone. It can cut electric bills, empower families to cope with fluctuating energy prices and reduce the environmental impact of electricity production. Many learn that it is easy to reduce their electrical use without impacting their daily lives. This publication will help you look at some of the most important ways you can conserve electricity and lower electric bills.

In Mauritius, the Central Electricity Board known as the CEB is responsible for the production and distribution of energy. About 40% of the total energy source in Mauritius is produced by the CEB while the rest is obtained from Independent Power Producers mainly via sugar estates. 80 % of energy is produced by thermal means while 20 % is obtained from small sugar estates. Worldwide energy grows at an annual rate of around 2. 4%, which is mainly due to the increasing industrialization, increasing population growth, development of large-scale energy conversion technologies and processes among others.

Procedures

Part 1: Recording the frequency of use of different appliances

The time of use for appliance like bulbs, television, computer, etc. were recorded. For appliance like the refrigerator, the time during which its motor was heard was recorded and used for calculation since this is the period during which the latter requires electricity. For the internet modem, the time of use is 24hr a day as it is never turned off.

Part 2: Using the electricity meter

The electricity meter was used in performing this part of the experiment. The experiment started at 6. 00 a. m. where the reading was taken. The meter was read at each 2-hour interval. The last meter reading was taken at 10. 00 p. m.

This experiment was performed every day from 10th of October 2018 to 7th of November 2018 (4 weeks).

Discussion

After analysis the total consumption for the household on a month basis according to the survey for the last month, the total electrical consumption was found to be 206KWh. On comparison with the Central Electricity Bill (CEB) for a previous month, the bill shows that our electrical consumption for our household of 4 people was 158 KWh which is a 23. 3% inaccuracy. This margin of error is due to the lack of expertise and precision in performing the experiment leading to this overestimate.

This statistical inference of the results obtained may be due to these following reasons:• Random errors that occurred while calculating the calculating the amount of electricity consumed per kWh for the different appliances. • Since final reading were often rounded off and taken to the nearest to the nearest whole number, there is this lack of precision in the values obtained that might explain this slight difference compared to the CEB value. • The times recorded for the purpose of this experiment might have be erroneous in several cases to lead to this overestimate.

Conclusion

According to research, wastage of energy is mostly done by residential area and this investigation has shown the various energy usage at the various time periods during a day and by the various appliances. The next step will now be to use the results obtained to manage the amount of energy used in a more efficient way in order to reduce our electricity consumption and be more sustainable leading to economical savings. Ways to reduce energy consumption:

  • Invest in solar panel
  • Switch to LEDs
  • Switch off appliances or lights when not using
  • Use energy efficient appliances
  • Do not leave appliances on standby mode.
