Military bearing is the bases in which all Soldiers practice in order to carry out good discipline and ethics throughout their military careers in the United States Army. This discipline instilled in them from day one in their Basic combat trainings and often lost as they get to their units out of a trade environment. Army regulations and The Articles of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) show us how a military service member should conduct himself or herself on a daily basis in and out of uniform.
Addressing NCOs by “SGT,” Warrant officers by “Mr. or Mrs. and officers by “sir” or “ma’am,” is not only a form of respect but is a major aspect of military bearing. Without Respect Military bearing and Consistency, a solider cannot work or do day-to-day duties properly in the workspace or be dependent upon by their fellow soldiers, or chain of command to perform their military duties properly. A military member is expected to be prompt, and reliable. “Not having military or professional bearing or allowing yourself to slack while in the service; Soldiers not only hinder the mission of the command but of the entire Army”. “In braking your military bearing, you violate many regulations such as FM 7-21.13 CH 4 and the UCMJ articles 91 and 92.” The punishments for these offences vary on the severity of the offence anywhere from being punished under article 15. Actions taken against a solider for disrespecting a NCO could be loss of pay or reduction in rank, having to pull additional duty, discharge, or even jail time depending on how severe the offence is. This could hinder a Soldiers Career and chances to grow and become a leader. Schools needed to progress in the ranks and the promotion board will come to a temporary and sometimes permanent halt. These are some actions resulting from disrespect to a Noncommissioned Officer or commissioned officer the best way to avoid these punishments is to hold your military bearing and to remember your rank and position. Sometimes it is very difficult for a solider to maintain military bearing. Getting too complacent with their environment and Soldiers tend to disrespect higher ups
All military soldiers have an obligation to conduct themselves as if they are adults and to show respect to the ranks above them. If a Soldier fails to do so, they are not only disrespecting the NCO and Officer above them. They are also breaking rules and regulations set in place by regulations and UCMJ.
In and out of uniform, we are soldiers 24/7 and should conduct ourselves as such. While for the most part at the end of the day when the uniform m comes off soldiers have normal lives. Although not in uniform military bearing and professional bearing should not slack. As often stated most people can tell a solider by their hair or the way they talk or walk. So soldiers in and out of uniform are being looked at and watched. Discrediting or disrespecting the army in any way could lead to some of the same punishments as disrespect to a NCO or Commissioned officer. As stated before you are a solider 24/7 and should conduct yourself so as to being credit upon the corps of noncommissioned officers the military service and themselves (The Creed of the Noncommissioned Officer) to avoid punitive punishments for lack of military bearing.
