Movie Is The Better Option In The Case Of Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby is formatted in two ways: film and novel. With having visuals and having the capability to see characters emotions is a lot better than reading the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald in my opinion causing for me to choose the movie over the novel.
The movie offers film techniques such as extreme longshots and High angle camera shots which offers many ways to analyse the movie, the novel only uses emotive language devices and in my opinion, I can’t get a clear image of what the novel is trying to give the readers and I’m sure many people feel the same way if they were a right–side dominant brain.
In the scene where Nick holds a “get together” for Gatsby and Daisy to meet once again after all these years, the Director Baz Luhrman used a medium shot or mid–shot on Daisy when Gatsby walked into the room and with the use of this shot it showed Daisy’s facial expressions showing the viewers that there was a connection between them and the novel isnt able to show facial expressions and causing for the readers not being able to have a connection with the characters and not being able to see how a character feels in that exact moment. Also referring to the extracts given; extract 3 title gives reasons as to why movies are better than novels and using this extract, the great Gatsby movie offers visualization which is better than imagination. They also include time and time is of the essence where the Great Gatsby movie shows the climax and main idea of the story with many details and good use of characters in two hours and 23 minutes whereas reading the novel will take a few days to finish unless you have time or that you have nothing else to do but where I’m getting to is that reading the novel will take time and watching the movie will still give you a clear indication on what happens without confusing language devices which are used in the novel. In the scene with Nick moving into his house and goes over to Daisy’s house for dinner and arrives home and sees a figure on the dock and Nick said that it seemed like he was reaching out over a distance to the green light and the director Baz Luhrman used a longshot, It contained the landscape and Gatsby and the novel describes that the green light is used as a way of showing that Gatsby reaches out to believe that Daisy will be his one day but the movie brings it out and makes it more alive or gives a image to the viewers that Gatsby is in love with Daisy and that the green light is her and all he wants it to reach out to the green light. Baz Luhrman used this technique to give the viewers a visualisation than rather them imagine the scene. Baz Luhrman also uses Characters that best suit the role and they also help viewers get a clear view of what their profile is such Daisy being a in love with money and Tom whom cheats on his wife and so on.
The novel does add more information at times but there’s always that situation of adding to much information which could cause for confusion to readers but with the film the scenes are carefully planned out and film techniques are used to make the area more clear or to show characters emotions but yes novels do have more informsati9n but movies are planned in a way only to show people how this type of setting in a novel will be acted and so forth.
In my opinion movies are the better option for many reasons such as time or visuals than imagination. Baz Luhrman carefully planned out the Great Gatsby to represent the novel in many ways with setting and cinematic techniques, but some information is left out but with that the movie still offers a clear idea of what happens in the novel and helps people understand it better and helps for students to film analysis on it and study different film techniques.
