My Core Values Essay
“Values are like fingerprints. Nobody’s are the same, but you leave them all over everything you do” (Elvis Presley). It is with this quote that I found myself realizing how important core values are. This is core values essay where I will share my thoughts.
Having core values are important because they are the foundation to every person’s life. They help us to grow and develop. My three, main core values are respect, humility, and honesty. It is mostly one’s actions that earn you respect, but we must be reminded that respect is a two-way street. In order to earn respect, you must give it. Respect is important to me because it reflects trust, support, and valuing others independence. Listening is a great way to show respect. This means being able to take in a person’s opinion with an open mind even if it contests your own. Respecting people’s religions should be considered as well. Lastly, respecting authoritative figures such as parents, teachers, co-workers, and bosses is a way to practice respect.
Humility is an important value to me because it is an asset for self-improvement and it keeps me thankful during my greatest and lowest points in life. By remaining humble, you are more accepting to opportunities to improve. I play softball and I love receiving constructive criticism from my coaches and teammates because I know that it is best for all of us. My favorite quote about humility is “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less” (Rick Warren). I appreciate this quote because it states that to be humble means to have enough self-respect to know your worth, but to not let it boost your ego and instead boost up others. To develop a more humble mindset, you should start by recognizing your flaws and know that it is okay to not be perfect because you are constantly evolving and improving. Avoid bragging and try boosting other people’s confidence by giving compliments. Ultimately, to be humble is to be grateful for everything the world has given and has to offer to you. Honesty is the best foundation for any relationship and it is my most favorite value because it can strengthen or weaken the bonds that we have with others. Bringing dishonesty into a relationship is toxic because you are replacing feelings of security with doubtfulness. I have lied to my parents about many things and have always felt nothing but regret once the truth is brought to surface. My parents always say, “We’re not mad, just disappointed”. I would rather get yelled at then to watch how silently my parents’ hearts drop with betrayal. From this, I’ve learned that the concealment of truth hurts more than truth itself. I have decided to express truths with my parents and now we have a stronger bond. A simple way to practice honesty is by being truthful about the little things. You may still have to serve consequences but they won’t be as bad as being looked at as a liar.
Life is easier when you have nothing to hide. Living by these three values have made me who I am today. I will always find importance in being respectful, humble, and honest. These values may not be important to others, but they will continue to mold me into a better person for the rest of my life.
